odd to think something that was effectively a throwaway group in a single story has now grown to cross five different companies* and grown into something wholely it's own.
We've gotten ideas like the man who forced himself to evolve so he could taste concepts, the City of the Saved where were all re-exist after the end of the universe, the tactical use of Peace, multiple Sherlocks Holmes vying for a unique self-identity, the machinations of Lolita, a story where the hero is written out of history (including the story itself)....
But but it all started with a War. A War in Time that we were never meant to see - rather meta really.

I've only ever read Alien Bodies which was their introduction.

I've been meaning to read Erasing Sherlock for a while. I've only read Alien Bodies though. Is there any other prerequisite novel?

Alien Bodies introduces the Faction. The Book of the War makes the Faction what it is today, and anything by Obverse expands it.

Interference also has an informative discourse on the Faction's raison d'etre.

If you're just starting out with the Faction, I'd highly recommend Magic Bullet's The True History of Faction Paradox featuring Sutekh and the Osirian court. The previous BBV audios (while good) aren't a requirement and the production values are stunning and just as good as their work on Kaldor City. The Faction Paradox stories to me are the definitive portrayal of a time active war, you really cannot beat the amount of sheer imagination and wit that goes into its creation. Even a story like Warring States, which uses the classic cliches of alternate history where Rome never fell and Nazi Germany won World War II, manages to turn them on its head by merging the two together in a war to the death. If it's got the FP name on it, it's almost guaranteed to be amazing stuff.

Well that seems to be the problem as they didnt seem to have a clear plot line through the BBC books from what i gather. Hence why Faction ended up as they were in Ancestor Cell, with them essentially becoming the Enemy.
Anyone know what the original point of the bone sculpture above Gallifrey was meant to be about? or is that something only Miles really knows (as per)

They didn't even manage to be the enemy, just petty, slightly more effective than the Sontarans, thugs.

They weren't the Faction. Not really. It doesn't fit their modus operandi during temporal combat, it'd be like a vulture whipping out a chaingun to kill carrion early, it makes no sense. The original intent of the Edifice is something of a mystery. Unless it turns up in an entry of The Book of the War, I think only Miles knows for certain what exactly its purpose was.

So essentially the EDA's at that point balls'd up the Edifice and the Faction, just so they could finish that storyline.
Maybe if Miles allowed it (which is extremely and most likely utterly impossible), they could do a truer version of the Edifice in the TV show. Just imagine it, the Timelords panicing , because someone has found where they are and they dont know who it is

Sorry if thread necromancy is frowned upon around here, but... Stranger Tales of the City will apparently come out winter 2017 (this coming winter, of course)...but they've only just started accepting submissions? Kinda odd. Also odd: Elizabeth Evershed is editor, rather than Philip Purser-Hallard. Strange...

Obverse does a submissions window once a year or so, last year was "Clockwork Iris" IIRC.

This may be a controversial opinion, but the Faction Paradox stuff kinda bored me in the EDA's, Lawrence Miles had lots of great ideas and imagery but I found much of the War arc in the EDA's to be needlessly convoluted and confusing and it didn't really 'feel' like Who to me, I have no desire to read or hear anything else about the Faction.
One thing I am wondering, I wonder if Miles ever approached BF about doing an F.P audio series...

I found the Faction Paradox stuff convoluted and uninteresting, too.
Also, don't we already have a thread about the Faction Paradox? I know we've discussed some of this somewhere before. Maybe it was in the EDA book discussion.

It's actually a staple problem in sci fi and fantasy, interesting ideas and that's all, no story.

Not that odd, they want pitches by May so if the commission in June you have months to get a short written even by October. And yes, I'm considering it!
