I've just listened to Beneath the Veil (BtV), which connects to two previous stories, The House by the Sea (THbtS) and Dreaming of the Water (DotW).
Spoilers for Dreaming of the Water and Beneath the Veil:
Spoilers for House by the Sea and Beneath the Veil:
Spoilers for Dreaming of the Water and Beneath the Veil:
The final scene of Dreaming of the Water leads into the opening scene of BtV, which is the first story of the main 1973 arc. However DotW picks up from Maggie's final appearance in episode 1108, set during 1970 where Sebastian Shaw takes her to Windcliff after she falls under the influence of yet another vampire. The main story of DotW takes place about six months after this, according to Nurse Laurie Norris, and ends a few days later, leading into BtV in 1973. Of course Laurie could be lying about the timeframe, however there's another factor that ties into the next point.
Spoilers for House by the Sea and Beneath the Veil:
During THbtS Gerald Conway (Colin Baker's character) accidentally frees the spirit of french murderess Danielle Roget, setting off the events of BtV. Early in BtV during the Blue Whale scene Brett and Carolyn mention Gerald, implying that HbtS overlaps with BtV for a short period. However during HbtS Gerald meets Elizabeth, Julia Hoffman and Barnabas (the story is told by Gerald to an audio recorder, allowing those characters to appear where their actors can't). Carolyn states in BtV that Elizabeth and Roger are out of town, the easiest excuse to keep them out of the story. Additionally in the third story of the arc, The Lucifer Gambit, Amy Jennings calls out for Elizabeth after having a nightmare. It could be that Elizabeth left immediately after meeting Gerald at Seaveiw, the titular House by the Sea and before the events of the 1973 arc, and that Amy had in her panic not remembered this. Gerald didn't leave a good impression with Elizabeth, so she may have vented to Carolyn and gone on vacation.
The presence of Barnabas and Julia, or lack of for the full casts, is harder to explain. It also ties ito the loose end I left on DotW. Gerald encounters Julia with Carolyn at the Blue Whale while he meets Barnabas on Widow's Hill (the latter invokes another vampire trait onto him by his voice not appearing on Gerald's tape). During DotW Laurie Norris mentions trying to contact Julia regarding allegations Sebastian Shaw makes during that story. It is plausible that Julia was taking a break from Windcliff, she did that for a while when investigating and working with Barnabas. It is possible she and Barnabas skipped town after learning that Beyond the Grave intended to film there. But I can't see them not being interested in the strange things going on in Collinsport, especially following up the loose end at the end of House by the Sea. At this point Barnabas is the protector of the Collins family.
