Some fascinating names on the list, including two people who would later become the Doctor.

So in some mad alternative universe, Capladi was a Doctor for a TV movie and a vignette (and a stunningly good Big Finish run) and we're just about to start the third McGann series afte his surprise cameo in "Day of the Doctor"??

McGann and Capaldi are my favourite Doctors as they are, but damn, just imagine how Capaldi would play the role in Scherzo, Dark Eyes or To The Death etc. In this mad alternative universe the TV Movie might have been more successful and Capaldi could have got a full run, the EDA's would never happen and BF might not have been able to get a license...things probably worked out for the best all thing considered. I'd be very curious as to how Eccleston would have played the role back in 1996, he hadn't be quite so established as a 'gritty adult drama' actor by that point, but the producers seemed fairly did set on making 8 a rather more romantic Doctor... Just imagine...'These shoes...they are fantastic!'

Wow! And a bunch of names of people who later ended up having a role in the new TV series -- Anthony Head, Tim Dalton, Simon Callow among probably others I missed.

Must have missed that, surely he'd be a better fit for the Master, he's one of my favourite Bonds...but even so he always struck me as a little too...intense for children's TV (if it were him shouting about his shoes in the park I think Grace would have slowly backed away when he wasn't looking...). Billy Connolly would have been interesting...

Top of the list shocked me Liam Cunningham (GOT Sir Davos DW Cold War Submarine Captain)
Everyone else I was aware of.

The Big Yin would have been too distracting though, if this casting was post Mrs Brown, where he got fantastic reviews, perhaps he would have been closer to being cast..

Hope BF get him back as Rassilon though...

He's named in Jean-Marc Lofficier's Nth Doctor book as a candidate and that book is pushing 20 years old. He hadn't yet appeared in Jude which was the role that brought him acclaim on film but he had been in an episode of Cracker, alongside John Simm. Both of them give astonishing performances. Absolutely fantastic, up there with the legendary one Robert Carlyle gave on the show. It wouldn't surprise me if it was Cracker that put his name in the heads of the casting directors.

Hope BF get him back as Rassilon though... Judging from Flash Gordon and The Living Daylights, I reckon he would have made a better companion than a Doctor, although you'd need someone really powerful to balance him out. It would've been ironic if he had gotten the part because he'd probably have pushed for that darker, passionate Doctor that Colin Baker was edging for. The same with Sean Bean. John Sessions proved that he could play a really could villain in Death Comes to Time, he might be the best part of it. "Oh, she hesitated. Fire." Gleeful, but a perfectly believable counterpoint to the Doctor's own heroism. Jonathan Pryce doesn't quite have the bravura you'd need, I'm surprised John Rhys-Davies isn't on the cast list somewhere. Ian Richardson would have been perfect for Borusa, particularly if he appeared beside Paul McGann. It's why his "casting" as Greyhaven in The Dying Days has such appeal. Goblin Valley also looks as though it would have been ideal for the outer wilderness of Gallifrey.
