Christmas At The Plaza - When not saving the world with SHIELD, Elizabeth Henstridge... Researches Christmas? You know, I wasn't entirely sure of it at first, but by the end I came out absolutely adoring it!
Christmas Unplugged - Like above, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would! 'It was certainly nice to see a non-white leading character in a Made-For-TV Christmas film! (She reminded me of a character in the Christmas script I've been working on for a year now too...).

I’m curious what’s different about it, but Godfather III is such a giant steaming pile I have trouble mustering the will to try to engage with it again.

Interesting news. I think if it didn't follow in the footsteps of two giants, 'Godfather III' would be much better thought of than it is.

Interesting news. I think if it didn't follow in the footsteps of two giants, 'Godfather III' would be much better thought of than it is. Absolutely. I wrote about it a few months back on this thread in reply to someone who had just watched the trio and felt that, having seen it at the Cinema on release, It was a very good film. Probably Coppola's best in the years since Apocalypse Now. Its failing was always that the first two were such cinematic greats, and that Coppola burnt himself out with Apocalypse Now. In a way you could call it Citizen Kane syndrome. Orson Welles was regarded as something of a busted flush because he could not recapture the heights of his youthful energy.

Dolittle [2020]
(Besides RDJ's vocal choice this is actually a pretty decent film and No singing which for me was a +)

Godzilla, King of the Monsters.
The earlier American Godzilla film (2014) was criticised for not showing enough of the monsters, this one was criticised for showing too much of them. You cannot win!
I loved this to pieces. It loses a bit not seeing it at the cinema, but the effects are nonetheless truly spectacular - and Godzilla is not given an easy time.
The bit at the end, when
{Spoiler} the remaining monsters emerge from the wreckage of the city and bow down before Godzilla
is a wonderful, wonderful moment.

Ellie & Abbie (& Abbie's Dead Aunt) - I'd planned on seeing this as part of the BFI Southbank's 'Flare' season but it sold out before I could get a ticket (and, well, Covid). Nine-odd months later and, whilst I'm not going to say that it's my favourite lesbian film I've seen recently (maybe hype-backlash? I don't know), I did enjoy it fine enough and can appreciate what they were doing...
Happiest Season - Speaking of lesbian films... I wasn't really much of a fan of the first half (it did drag on for me slightly), but, with the fight & coming out, the second half won me over & I ended up absolutely adoring it! (Something I never thought I'd say about a film starring Kristen Stewart).
Deck The Halls - That was... At least passable, I guess? I liked the ending ok enough, but you can tell that some of the actors were there for the pay-cheque. Even at 93minutes, I think that this might have been a little long in places? If you were to cut out ten or so minutes of the 'zany antics' or maybe focus more on the family side I might have enjoyed it a little bit more...

Yesterday...
Mulan, now that it's free on Disney+ (I wasn't about to pay $30 to a streaming service I'm already paying to subscribe to). I think there were some pacing problems throughout the film, some stuff that was a bit obvious/predictable, and thought it had a huge villain problem (both in terms of half-baked scripting and an underwhelming actor), but the core story is really good, and every single frame of the movie is *beautiful,* like jaw-droppingly beautiful. 3.5/5
Mank. I was really excited for this one ahead of its release, and also giving it a bit of side-eye because it was for this that Netflix canceled Mindhunter. Was glad to find that I ended up absolutely loving it. I think I’m going to need to revisit a few times; there is an awful lot going on, plus I was drinking in the scenery so much that sometimes I missed story/dialogue -- the B&W tones, the framing of every shot, the directing, even the sound design, all of it was stunning to look at and listen to. Story and storytelling absolutely top-notch too, as well as the acting by everyone involved. Maybe one or two characters slightly underutilized, but nothing egregious or in a way that detracted from the film. The actor they had playing Orson Wells, in particular, was just out of this world, like he was channeling the ghost of Wells himself. Not that there have been a huge number of movies actually released this year, but I think after just one viewing, this is my #1 of 2020.

Freaky. Body swap horror movie that's not as fun as it's premise suggests.

Return of the Evil Dead (1973).
Ah, the 70s. Where slow, lumbering monsters always caught up with the pretty girls. Where the serial-cigarette-smoking hero rolled up onto the scene with a sheepskin jacket (because it's cold) and sunglasses (because he's a poseur). Where the monsters are so terrifying, even their horses move in slow-motion. Where have those days gone?
Anyway, this was the second of four Blind Dead films directed and written with loving care by Amando de Ossorio. I always go back to them. Strange how there's something reassuring about a film filled with reanimated corpses. I keep expecting Hollywood to bring back the Blind Dead (Templar Knights who have been tortured and killed for their nefarious deeds, and then resurrected because ... don't know), but we've been treated to only a couple of low budget 're-imaginings' since then. Maybe it's just as well!

Krampus - Whilst I'm glad to have (finally) seen this, I don't know if I'm in a particular rush to see it again any time soon...

Godmothered
Not very good cross between Elf and Enchanted. Parts of it were kind of cute but it was mostly too saccharine and predictable. I like fairytales and fish out of water stories, but this was far too bland and by the numbers for me.
Side note: Oddly I found a few aspects of this movie are slightly similar to something I am writing but mine takes a bit of an more adult angle.

Diabolique - A masterpiece of a nail-biter. I was happy to learn that Mr Polly had not seen it and didn't know anything about it. He is a fairly suspicious-minded viewer, so I was curious if this film could defeat his film-guessing faculties (it did). It is intricately plotted, wonderfully shot, and has as much suspense as any of Hitchcock's best. The film ends with a request not to spoil the plot for others, so I'll refrain from blathering more. But suffice to say that anyone who has not seen it should rectify that as soon as possible. I suppose the other tidbit worth noting is that M. Fichet is essentially a French Columbo - cigar, shabby dress, unassuming demeanor hiding a sharp mind. So, especially check it out if you're a fan of the good lieutenant.

Boss Level. An action movie version of Groundhog Day should be really good, but this is really bad full of boring action that has been done better in loads of other films & Frank Grillo is a terrible actor. What on earth is Naomi Watts doing in this trash?
