Box sets require a large investment of money in one chunk. I really have to budget to be able to afford them. I'd rather do main range subscriptions, as I have mostly done up to now, and get stories from a variety of Doctors that way. Why fix something that's not broken? I was curious whether costing was really that drastically different, so I just had a poke around on the BF site to look for comparisons. What I looked at and found: (Canadian dollars) Monthly Range #214 & 215 -- so four hours of story -- are priced at $27.72 each, meaning $55.44 for 4h of story if bought individually. Subscriptions save a few bucks, but realistically, not a lot. By way of comparison, 4h upcoming box sets Doom Coalition 3, Doom Coalition 4, UNIT Shutdown, and UNIT Silenced are each one priced at just $36.98 each--making them nearly $20 cheaper than the same length of story from the Monthlies. Further comparing, I looked at the last four titles of the current run of 4DAs (at 1h each, 4 to come up to equivalent length). Those four titles combined comes out at $81.28, which is only half the season. Broadly speaking--and with eyes only to cost and not to personal story style preference--to me it looks like box sets are the cheapest option by a pretty fair margin. And at current pricing would most definitely be cheaper than the 4DA pricing by a wide margin. A 12 month sub is exactly the same price as six 4 disc box sets at preorder price though (once you add on ten quid for the "free" extra title you can get). And yes, 4da's and Torchwood are insanely expensive in comparison.

If they're going to do this then I want the main range to actually just stop at say 250 or 300 for instance rather than just get transformed into box sets. I think the main range just needs a bit of emotive lifting rather than this though.

That the emotions in the stories need to be hightened? That they need to play on the listeners' emotions? I'm very confused.

I might be wrong here, but I think he means that the monthly range needs a bit more "oomph" to it. A bit more emotive heavy lifting. Although to be fair, I do think the range has gotten better recently by shifting away from their seemingly chronic sequelitus back towards more original concepts. The Waters of Amsterdam, Aquitaine, and The Peterloo Massacre were all very nice, almost wholly original stories, even if "companion returns into Doctor's later life" seems like the new growing trend (viz. Nyssa, Peri and Mel). That trilogy there basically fulfilled my wish of making the monthly series feel dangerous again and I hope it continues into the future. Also, I am rather looking forward to another Five/Turlough release in the form of The Memory Bank and Other Stories.
