I'd love to have the Doctor meet Sima Qian - Han Wudi's grand historian. An incredibly interesting guy, a great historiographer - one who established China's tradition of dynastic histories. Also a man of firm character - and with a rather moving backstory. 8th Doctor and Sima Qian sharing some tea and stories, maybe solving a mystery together... And I can definitely see the Doctor getting into some sort of serious trouble at Han Wudi's court. Han Wudi was a difficult chap to get along with. ... Yeah. I'd love that.

I know nothing about Sima Qian or Han Wudi, but your idea sounds fascinating and full of potential. Sima wrote Shiji - a thing known sometimes as 'Grand Historian' or 'The Records of the Grand Historian' or 'The Grand Scribe's Records'... An incredible body of text that encompassed all of China's history from mythical/legendary rulers up to his own time, pretty much the first one of its kind in China. Quite interesting conceptually, too, as he chose a fairly non-linear format. He devoted his whole life to it. And it's not only a rich source of information, it is a mighty good read as well - Sima was a gifted story teller. He's also known for an episode where he spoke up against what he saw as unjust treatment of a loyal general. The emperor took major offence and sentenced Sima Qian to death (like I said - Han Wudi was not an easy person to get along with). The execution could be commuted by money or castration. Sima didn't have enough money, so he had to opt for the latter. He apparently angsted over it a lot later in life - he felt like he had shamed his ancestors. But it did give him a chance to finish his records.

I'd like to see Peggy Schuyler meet the Doctor. She seems like prime companion material as a known but extremely minor character in history primarily known for marrying extremely rich and being Alexander Hamilton's sister-in-law.
