ITV tried to compete-cash in once more with Who by commissioning a pulp 1930s Universal-esque superhero monster mashup. Interesting choice, but not sure how I felt about the end result. Felt like it never had enough fun with the central concept and the ending was just a big 'And then they all Died. Oops!'.

It was, let's face it a pile of ? But slightly better than Beowulf return to sheildlands (where ever they are!) To silly for adults, to grown up for kids....and the acting.....ham sandwich anyone??? ITV threw shed loads of cash at various projects in the hope that they could get a Gerne hit. They all failed, big time...looks like we are now only getting crime/thriller dramas, unreality shows & dating show on ITV for a while.....shame

It started off quite dodgy, but sucked me in so by the end I was quite hooked with it. It's a shame because it got rather good and of course the ending was supposed to be a cliffhanger leading into series two, but then they cancelled it. Blake's 7 anyone??
Cheers

Cheers Tony I had given up long before the end, just could not stand the acting style. it could easily have been a great series. I personally thought the acting was fine. In fact I actually thought it wasn't over the top enough, and that speaks to the rest of the series: it took too long to really go to town with the whole 'Universal Horror Superhero idea'. I wish Higerson had maybe gone through one more redraft of the arc to really pump up the looney factor. Spring Heel Jack had a pretty cool introduction, but then when he's revealed for he is, it just becomes comedy pratfalls and a character we don't get near enough time to invest in.

Indeed, Houdini & Doyle did Spring Heel Jack much better in their episode on him.
... Does ITV just have a thing for him?

I missed/ignored this the first time around because a, I had started other ITV "adventure series" in the past and not got on with them and b, I really like Moffet's Jekyll, so I didn't feel in need of another telling of that story
However after watching Houdini & Doyle (which I loved) ITV encore were re-running Jekyll & Hyde so I gave it a go...currently three episodes in and I am really glad I have. You can keep all those deep dark dramas, give me big, brash and bonkers any day of the week!
