Bf Podcast exclusive in response to a letter by I think our very own nathangervis about how far in advance BF record the 4DA's, David Richardson has revealed that Series 8 is being recorded during this year, scripts for seris 9 are being written and series 10 is being thought about, no further word yet though on the new companion that he mentioned in the 1st podcast of March.

I'll be over the moon if at least one of those is a Fourth Doctor and Adric season.

Nothing about that announcement is anything other than wonderful news. Or in other words, more Tom Baker can only be a very good thing. Or in other words - excellent!

Wasn't there also talk of "other things" planned with the Fourth Doctor? I wonder what that/those thing/s could be. Some boxsets?

10 series of the FDA sounds like a nice, big number to end things on, if that is indeed the plan, I've only heard the first series, but weren't the FDA designed specifically to be short and snappy, the stories reflecting 1970's Saturday tea time?
Maybe a move to longer stories in the Main Range or boxsets would be a good idea if they plan on introducing new companions?, 50 minute episodes with a familiar tone and lots of callbacks to Baker's TV stories works well in the FDA when they are largely (i.m.o) aimed at recapturing the era, rather than advancing the Doctor and his companions in very different ways to the Tv series...
You could keep the FDA as a legacy range, and the longer stories as the experimental stuff...
Christopher H. Bidmead presents boxsets maybe?
More Novel Adaptions?
Talking Cabbage companion chronicles?

I adore Tom Baker he's just bonkers & eccentric like myself, so glad to hear this news, i would like to hear a story post Well Mannered War to see how the Doctor & Romana escaped there predicament with The Black Guardian.

Baker isn't my favourite Doctor, but I'd argue he is certainly the best-in terms of popularity, legacy and influence on the character, no other actor and era has come close (apart from maybe Troughton), and yes utterly bonkers in the best way, I've only seen about half of his TV stories but isn't he much more remose and darker in his final season...maybe they could introduce a new companion to help explain why...

He is subdued throughout season 18, i think his health wasn't great, his relationship was on/off with Lalla Ward & he didn't like the changes J-NT & Bidmead were making. For me the Hinchcliffe/Holmes era is my favourite three seasons i could watch those stories over & over, can't wait for volume 2 of Hinchcliffe presents.

I enjoyed the Hinchliffe years enormously, but own barely any Who on DVD and don't do really do streaming (not on broadband, so it uses up too much internet data) so I can't really justify £20-50 on the P.H.P range, maybe if they go on sale I'll take a punt...

I highly recommend The Talons Of Weng Chiang & Seeds Of Doom are my favourite Fourth Doctor stories, both classic 6 parters.

But the nostalgia got old quickly, and by the third or fourth series of the range that factor was preventing it from producing any instant classics. Most of the more memorable stories from the range are the ones that try new things with the Fourth Doctor and think outside of the police box. Think Wrath of the Iceni (straight historical), Requiem for the Rocket Men (switching roles for the Doctor and the Master), Death Match (another strong Master story) and Paradox Planet/Legacy of Death (really playing with the time travel aspect in an interesting way). The stories that deliberately play into the 70's Saturday tea time and nostalgia for the era in general are average at best, unambitious in general and bad at worst. Just look at Bore on Krelos, Superfluous Return Trip to Telos for example, which range from uneventful to an excuse to watch Tomb of the Cybermen yet again by the writer.
