Some final pre-release thoughts... I am not particularly excited for the 5th Doctor story. Not because I can't really see how they'll do the weeping angels on audio (which I don't, but I have enough faith in Big Finish to do it well) but because they're just not a compelling villain to me. They were really good in Blink and, to an extent, in the Series 5 two-parter but since then each of their appearances have just ruined Blink for me - I feel like they were a compelling one-off villain and should never have been anything more than that. I would love to be proved wrong though and will listen with an open mind. Have you read the Titan Comics Tenth Doctor storyline Weeping Angels of Mons? It's one of the best things Titan comics have done. No, I have very little interest in comics in general. The only comics I ever read are the ones in DWM (which I don't enjoy that much) and Star Wars ones (but not very often).

After all, just how many people are assumed dead with no bodies found during war? It's a perfect feeding ground for the Angels!

I'm most excited for the Five and Eight stories. Both of them deal with some of my favorite monsters and eras.

In the mp3 zip file, did anyone else notice The Sontaran Ordeal is misfiled as The Sontatan Ordeal?

At the very least, Fallen Angels is absolutely great and Judoon in Chains is absolutely fantastic. Too bad I'm going to have to save the other two stories for tomorrow but I'm really glad I got to hear those. Already worth the price of admission and then some.

Fallen Angels
This one was pretty much what I expected. Not amazing, but enjoyable enough to listen to to kill an hour. My opinions of the weeping angels remain unchanged and I was a little disappointed about the ending and the fact they decided to go down the "timey-wimey" route (although I suppose that was to be expected). I did, however, love the music, which is saying a lot - I don't usually notice music in audios or TV at all unless it's amazingly good or awfully out of place and the first half was very solid. Also, does anyone else think that Davison is better at making his voice sound younger? Perhaps it's just that the majority of 5th Doctor audios I've listened to were older ones where he hadn't quite found his feet but usually I have a moment where I think "ah yeah, he's older than when he was on TV" (not that that bothers me, it doesn't take me out of it for too long and is completely understandable).
Judoon In Chains
Best. Opening scene. Ever. I loved this one - as ever, Colin Baker (or BAEker, amirite hehe) is amazing and the Judoon are adorable I love them so much, how do I get one? This first half was really fun to listen to but it really picked up when it got into the trial part and yes, all the poetry stuff was ridiculous, but I loved its oddness <3. I can't wait for any potential future Judoon stories, should Nick feel up to doing the voice again...
Harvest Of The Sycorax
Not much I have to say about this one, but that's a good thing. I loved The Christmas Invasion and I was always interested in seeing (yeah, I know, shh) more of the Sycorax and this didn't disappoint at all. This was a brilliant audio, but then what else would you expect from Sylvester McCoy performing a script by James Goss.
The Sontaran Ordeal
Oh. My. God. That was amazing. Paul McGann in the time war, as it should be, and the Sontarans at their best - they have the comedy of the RTD era without being completely ruined like in the Moffat era. This was really emotional, especially that ending (I might have cried a little...) and argh the 8th Doctor in the Time War always gets me emotional, even just the little bit in The Diary Of River Song. Honestly this was probably the best hour of Doctor Who I've heard since The Pyramid Of Sutekh. Well, this was by far the best story of the box set and the perfect end to it. I can't wait to see (there I go again) what they do with the next volume.

Oh that was brilliant.
The Angels work perfectly
The Judoon show such potential in a completely unexpected direction (Well done Misters Bernard and Morris and kudos to Mr Briggs for one of his best performances in years)
The Sycorax didn't grab me as much as the others but it was good and as with the others had a great supporting Cast.
The Sontarans the slowly unravelling Doctor in the unravelling universe of the Time War and once again the exploration of the Sontaran mind-set portrayed by Misters Starkey and Ryan.
A perfect gateway to BF for the post 2005 Crowd Roll on Vol 2!

I noticed when I was downloading the set that the running times are very different. The first and fourth stories are under an hour, while "Judoon in Chains" is 78 minutes!

My CD's won't be arriving for a few more days, without spoiling too much, I was wondering A) is it hinted how late/early in the time war episode 8 is set?
B) How were the behind the scenes interviews? Did they talk about obtaining the rights etc, any hints towards Volume 2?

I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed all four stories. Judoon in Chains was my favorite - a truly heartfelt story that lends a lot of character to the Judoon - but I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed Harvest of the Sycorax and The Sontaran Ordeal. Fallen Angels was wonderfully directed and I think I liked the choir here far more than I did in The Peterloo Massacre. All four stories in this box set were wonderfully directed, actually. I think I'll be giving Fallen Angels a repeat listen later today - I was half asleep when I listened to it this morning. I'm eager to see what Volume 2 brings us next year!

I noticed when I was downloading the set that the running times are very different. The first and fourth stories are under an hour, while "Judoon in Chains" is 78 minutes! Whoops! I know we have a reputation for overwriting, but I'm fairly sure the final script wasn't overlong in this case; you should have seen how much we had to cut to get it down to (cough) one hour - it could have been a four-parter! I think the difference in running time is down to the nature of story; the court scenes are by their nature more slowly paced, as are the various other more thoughtful moments that are interspersed with the action. That's my excuse, anyway.
