Robin of Sherwood: The Knights Of The Apocalypse. An adaptation of the unmade feature length conclusion to the classic TV show with many of the original cast returning plus some names familiar to BF fans (Colin Baker, Terry Molloy, Lisa Bowerman). Directed by Robert Young who directed a lot of the TV show & written by Richard Carpenter who created the show. It captures the tone of the show really well.

“Danger in the Dark” and “The Immortal Murderer”
Fan recreations of two lost episodes from The Shadow radio series. The latter of which served as the inspiration/was outright stolen for the character of Vandal Savage in the DC Universe.

Have just begun listening to Red Panda Adventures by Decoder Ring Theatre. A pulp series focusing on Canadian hero The Red Panda and his sidekick the Flying Squirrel. A lot of fun and very much in the vein of The Shadow.

The Man Who Hated Scenes (1973)
Dramatised by William Ingram. An episode of Price of Fear presented by Vincent Price and featuring Peter Cushing.
A really excellent and effective story. The end of the tale reminded me of better episodes of Tales from the Unexpected.

The Conception of Terror
A series of modern day re imaginings of some of M.R. James’s’ stories.
For the most part, I think they’re quite successful at offering their own take on the works of James. The opening story ‘Casting the Runes’ is particularly a delight with a brilliant Cat and Mouse dynamic between Dunning and the evil but still quite morally indifferent occultist Karswell. Speaking of, Reese Shearsmith is quite frankly electric in the role. Would highly recommend.
‘Lost Hearts’ was up next and while it did offer some interesting takes on what is one of my favourite James stories with some excellent performances I did find it rather predictable towards the end. Reminded me a lot of one of the better Twilight Zone episodes I must admit.
Now ‘The Treasure of Abbot Thomas’ and ‘A View from the Hill’ I was less than impressed by. The former starts off strong. Really strong as a matter of fact but ends on a bit of a whimper. And the latter although offering some great performances from both Andy Nyman and Alice Lowe is far too long for its own good and occasionally trades its spooky atmosphere for cheap jump scares.
Overall, I rather liked it and wouldn’t mind seeing a second volume (unlikely as it may be) especially to see how they’d interpret other James stories such as ‘Count Magnus’ ‘A Warning to the Curious’ and ‘Oh, Whistle and I’ll Come To You My, Lad’
Mind you, none of these can hold a candle to M.R. James original stories and I’d encourage you to seek them out when you can. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Savage Stone Age (Adapted by Terry Deary and Nick Baker)
I have a lot of fond memories of reading the original Horrible History books as a child at school but I wasn’t exactly sure how well it would translate over to audio.
Thought this was simply delightful and genuinely funny in places. So I’m definitely going to keep an eye out for other dramatisations in the future.

The Sandman: Act II, just released today and the casting on Delirium is perfect. I genuinely can’t wait to see how this plays out, having read the comics this time so I know what’s coming but not how it’ll be performed.

Finished Daleks-The Mutation of Time
The ancient Egypt segment dragged out a bit but things picked up once things moved back to Kembel. The epilogue added some neat touches to various loose ends, though ending on the Monk’s comical fate felt a bit a bit inappropriate for this epic. Sara’s death was very well done.

The Ash Tree (M.R. James)
Adapted by Matthew Holness. Short as this may be (and to be fair it’s not exactly like the original story was that long either) this made for a really terrific script with all the cast pulling in excellent performances.
Definitely one of M.R. James most creepiest stories with Holness adding in some quite necessary additions to make it more contemporary.

Teatime (Katherine Jakeways)
A BBC Radio 4 Comedy starring Phillip Glenister and Samantha Spiro. The cast is all on top form and I must admit I did find it rather endearing. As short as it is.

Doctor Who and the Pescatons. Not very good, the whole thing feels rushed and underwritten, it is done in a Companion Chronicle style. There is a good interview with Liz Sladen though.

Steptoe and Son Down Under (1977)
A recording of the second stage tour that Wilfrid Brambell and Harry H Corbett took in the latter half of the seventies. Considering none of the material was written by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson but in fact was devised by the tour’s two stars it’s actually rather good.
Definitely something to give a listen if you’re a fan of the series. If only for the sheer novelty of it.
