My favourite acted and written scene in Who:“Winning? Is that what you think it’s about? I’m not trying to win. I’m not doing this because I want to beat someone, or because I hate someone, or because I want to blame someone. It’s not because it’s fun. God knows it’s not because it’s easy. It’s not even because it works because it hardly ever does.. I DO WHAT I DO BECAUSE IT’S RIGHT! Because it’s decent! And above all, it’s kind! It’s just that.. Just kind. If I run away today, good people will die. If I stand and fight, some of them might live. Maybe not many, maybe not for long. Hey, you know, maybe there’s no point to any of this at all. But it’s the best I can do. So I’m going to do it. And I will stand here doing it until it kills me. And you’re going to die too! Some day.. And how will that be? Have you thought about it? What would you die for? Who I am is where I stand.. Where I stand is where I fall. Stand with me. These people are terrified. Maybe we can help a little. Why not, just at the end, just be kind?"
It's a sensational mission statement from Moffat about the raison d'etre of The Doctor. Why he does what he does. And like Michelle Gomez, Capaldi gets more Glaswegian as his anger grows which adds to the piece. The way he barks "it's DECENT", pure (Space) Glasgow. And speaking of Gomez, her and Simm have to be up to it for the reaction shots. Both have to seed that they might just be persuaded. Missy in particular given her arc.
Just wonderful Who and...sorry, I'm not trying to be a hater, we ain't seen anything half this good written for Jodie, or giving her something like that to act with. You can say what you will about Moffat...he could write defining speeches. Thinking of The Zygon ep or Rings Of Ahkaten.
I like to think the Simms Master actually was coming around to helping the Doctor until he changed his mind at the last minute. Just couldn’t bear the thought that his old enemy might be right I suppose.
The tragedy of Missy is she DID go back to help. She did change her mind. She was prepared to give everything to help strangers...but she got killed before she could get to The Doctor and he never even knew she'd changed her mind. Tragic, really. Deeper than it seems. Then....I like Sacha but just to go back to "I'm evil and zany again for....reasons" is not very interesting after Missy's arc, sacrafice and tragedy.
