He talked about all of his career, not just about Doctor Who, but i didnt want to split it up for different threads so i thought i'd include everything here. If thats okay of course.
Last night was a fantastic night. Cornell is one of those great people, who is always happy to answer any question and talk in depth about what comes to mind. God he went off on tangents and dropped some great anecdotes. He mentioned so much and i did get my stuff signed by him, which were:
Books:
Love and War, No Future, Goth Opera and Human Nature
Audio:
The Shadow of the Scourge and Seasons of Fear.
I should say right of the bat, that he says its extremely unlikely that he'll write for Doctor Who again after the Third Doctor comic series, unless he comes up with a great idea. He isnt one of the writers for Moffatt's last Who series and since he doesnt know Chibnall, he doubts he'll be asked to write for him. With all his other work going on, he also doesnt think he'll ever write for BF again, which is a shame. But never say never.
He loves that Benny has her own Fandom in the Whoniverse and he says that Lisa Bowerman embodies her so much, that he cant see any body else in the role, Benny is Lisa and vise versa. Big Finish always contact him, whenever they do another series of audios of Benny. He was unhappy with the later couple of series as he felt they werent going anywhere, so when James Goss took over as 'show'runner for the new adventures and they talked about where the New Adventures box sets were going, he was so giddy. Also when he talked about Volume 3, i couldnt help shout out Sam Kisgart when he talked about the cast lol.
He actually showed us some sketch artwork for the Third Doctor comic and it captures the era and the mannerisms of the characters so well.
He talked abit about writing for Nu-Who under Russell and how that came about after the ending of the Shalka Doctor. He says there should be copies of the second Shalka story out on the net somewhere lol. He said it took 18 months and 19 drafts to complete Fathers Day as he had so much time to write it, but with Human Nature/Family of Blood, he wrote 3 drafts. Russell wanted him to do the adapt of the book and asked him to keep it as close to the book as possible. They lost a scene form the script because of bad weather, so Russell wrote Five pages to take its place.
I talked to him about Human Nature briefly when i was getting my stuff signed and said there was one scene from the book that i wished he kept in the show, but understood why it didnt make it and that involved the Doctors finger. The punishments for the family is actually its replacement lol. He also said to me that the reason he wrote Human Nature was to actually make up for No Future, which he admits is a horrible book and i shouldnt read it lol.
Moffat was the best man at his wedding and he mentioned that all the caterers actually stopped working and came out because the speech was so good lmao.
One secret tidbit that he couldnt talk about much was that a comic series that he's written for an established character will be revealed at the New York ComicCon, thats all he could tell us lol.
Saucer County is getting a sequel series called Saucer State and will be released through IDW and with have the original team return. IDW will also collect the original series and re-release it.
He talked about his time with DC, how his first year was before the New 52 and his second was during New 52's first year. He shakes his head at how bad he feels Stormwatch turned out. He got all of his wishlist for villains for the Lex Luthor Action Comics series. and he joked how all his comics seemed to get cancelled after 15 issues, unless they are limited series, except Wolverine........which only got ending when he gave Wolverine the ability to die. Yep, he got his own series cancelled at the point, which he still laughs so hard about and admits to facepalming about it
Oh and this last bit i can talk about, because everything else was about his home life, which wouldnt be right to mention here lol.
When Shalka was cancelled, he got a phonecall from Russell himself saying that Who was coming back and Shalka wouldnt be carrying on. He said Russell was saying it as if it was a bad thing that Who was coming back, because he understood that that meant that Shalka was going to be the official Ninth Doctor anymore and ended the phonecall with "Oh and if you talk about it.....Bye" and hung up so Cornell spent ages trying to keep his mouth shut lol.
All in all was a fantastic evening and fanboyed all the way home
