Hey everyone,
For those who saw the series when it originally aired, what was it like to experience Dark Shadow's descent into the supernatural?

My mom was one of the early adapters of the show. She wasn't able to consistently watch it (the horrors of the area before one could simply pull up the episode later), but she remembers it was spooky early on, but not scary. She was very confused by the first Dark Shadows ghost and loved all the spooks on long before our vampire friend showed up.
I grew up hearing bit about the story until we heard about it on SciFi, and I jumped in right after Barnabas and Julia returned from the then future of 1995.

The day I first started watching was June 20, 1968, the day Trask tried to burn Cassandra. From that day on, I was hooked. I had a crush on Jonathan, and my mother, who was Jonathan's age, later developed a thing for David Selby. (She adored him in Flamingo Road and Falcon Crest.)I identified with Vicky, and wore my hair like hers, and even bought clothes similar to hers. Bought most of the memorabilia issued at that time. I was very sad when it went off the air, but moved on to college and life and didn't think about it again until 5 years ago, when I decided to see the whole series from the beginning via Netflix. Have a totally different perspective on it, and I have the money to go to Festivals and buy all the BF recordings and the coffin set, but I wouldn't describe myself as a rabid fan. Still, it did help me get through what was a difficult situation at home when I was a teen. Which also seems to have been the case with a lot of people.

I'm sure I saw the show along with other soaps - I think the TV was probably just left on ABC in the afternoon - but I don't think I paid very much attention until Barnabas bared his fangs and then I was suddenly hugely obsessed, it was like having Halloween every day! (Which was about the point where I got banned from watching it after getting a nightmare about vampires).
It's been interesting getting to know Dark Shadows the other way around, I watched all of 210 onward before watching the pre-Barnabas episodes in The Beginning sets. I kept thinking, "hurry up and do something supernatural" but some time after I'd seen all of the pre-Barnabas episodes I realized that the show had really always been supernatural, but it became more and more overtly supernatural as a gradual progression.
