Like the other stories by Christopher Bailey, The Children of Seth has a debated deeper meaning. I want to know what you guys think that is. I personally think it's a commentary on the hypocrisy of society.

Arrogance is also a theme. The Autarch Siris (may he live forever) is a ruler in name only, with Byzan all too free to inflict his draconian and paranoid rule on the population. However Byzan also believes he hold the power, when really he only does when it doesn't clash with Albis's intentions. It's only when the Doctor arrives and things heat up that Byzan becomes aware of how autonomous Albis has become and just how much Albis has done behind his back.
Byzan also uses Anahita's ideas to gain power, the invention of an enemy to rally the people, and even uses the Doctor's face to make Seth more tangible. So it's no surprise when it comes back to bite him on the bum when the Doctor leads those Byzan has declared dissenters on him, forcing Byzan to destroy Albis.
Byzan's final fate is also a result of his arrogance. His constantly mistreating Anahita leads to her taking advantage when the tables of power are turned. Even when he connects the dots, Siris isn't too fussed and decides it saves the trouble of a trial

Perhaps the deepest meaning is the one presented about the battle whatshisface the old soldier fought in - the one where they fought against themselves. The metaphor for all confit being that the greatest fight is against ourselves.

Hmm... The only enemy are those that we ourselves create? That's a very Buddhist idea and fits quite snugly into Bailey's aesthete.

Gotta admit, I missed all this subtext. Maybe cos I normally listen while driving so don't think too deeply about stories

What does anything really mean? Oh. Great. Now I'm depressed.

What does anything really mean? Oh. Great. Now I'm depressed. Whatever you would like to make of it. Our earthen realm and the cosmos beyond is wondrous with indescribable permutations and combinations human beings can only dream of. No one can possibly know everything, so here on microcosm teeming with colour and life, whirling excitedly through a greater web of stars, stories and worlds -- anything can be possible.

Still depressed. Well, as a wise man once said: "I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, 'wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them?' So now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe."
