So I've been reading Christmas on a Rational Planet and it's been good, but my question is what is up with Lawrence Miles, why does the fandom hate him and what does the novel mean?

When RTD and SM were announced as chief writers for the new series he wrote a bizarre blog (think current fan frustration X100) and when BF and DWM staff defended RTD and SM he treated them just the same.

An often brilliant writer (Alien Bodies and the Faction Paradox Protocols still remain my favourites), but an altogether very peculiar man. He's got elements of Philip K. Dick and Harlan Ellison rolled into one package. Christmas on a Rational Planet was I think the Doctor championing purpose and fighting against a living embodiment of irrationality. If Cacophony had succeeded then everything, everywhere would be rendered totally meaningless. Basically, it's a novel whose main antagonist wants to remove cause and effect from the cosmos, so it explores the dynamics of that. Sort of.

I've only read Alien Bodies by him and its a fantastic book. He does take larger ideas and writes them in intriguing and thought provoking ways. Its not that the fandom hates his work, its the fact of his personal attitudes to how things were going with NuWho in his opinion.

Boils down to the classic 'great writer but complete and total (wounding finger on needle) to everyone, thus costing him his career'.

It really is a shame, because I think Lawrence Miles would be perfect for writing War Doctor stuff. It's like that era was made for him.
