As much as I'm enjoyed and am excited for the second box set (Six! Seven! River's inevitable take down of their outfits!), does anyone else feel The Diary of River Song is perhaps a little too Doctor focused? Yes, The Doctor is a big part of River's life, but I went into the series for River and I really want to see her on her own. It does seem that we'll see River getting her own assemble at some point or another, though.
I do feel its heading in that direction yeah. I think her going and seeing other Doctors is also a bit much for her character. I would have loved the Boxsets to have been about her unseen adventures between her times with 11
I'm a Doctor, but probably not the one you were expecting
I'm really hoping for her to emerge more as her own character but I can't begrudge her wanting to meet different incarnations of someone she loves and I think Alex has such great chemistry with others that it's probably going to be every bit worth it to get to hear her interact with more Doctors. Personally I don't know if she was necessary to Doom Coalition but I think she's made a truly fine addition. Besides, if it helps Big Finish to convince anyone still on the fence that New Who is worthwhile by mixing up old and new a bit more, that may be a good thing too.
I've loved her in Doomco. Diary #1 was fun but a bit too Benny at times. Ultimately, I'd like to see River interact with a new part of the DWU each boxset, but not always a Doctor. Like we've have River-meets-Eight and River-meets-Six-and-Seven (which is a great escalation!) but next set should probably be something else, like maybe she meets Romana or joins UNIT or the Rocket Men.
Well, we've only heard the first boxset (and got story details for the second) so it's a bit early to judge i.m.o, from what I've seen online the recent 8dr Boxsets and New Who stories were jumping on points for alot of people, McGann's presence in the first boxset certainly persuaded me to take a gamble on the first set, (whilst I'm glad I did I was never a huge fan of River on TV, though her audio stories have certainly helped change that opinion) and it's possible the same holds true for alot of new listeners, some like River more as a stand alone character, and for some her interactions with the Doctor are the main selling points of her stories, I think it's understandable BF would want to focus on the latter more for the time being as they build up a new audience (I think it's likely many long term BF listeners with little interest in New Who will skip this range anyway, but introducing Classic Doctors with the River and CD:NM sets is a very smart idea as many won't have seen or heard much Who with the Classic Doctors) but whilst I'm certainly enjoying hearing her interact with other Doctors (and I hope she eventually interacts with them all), I do hope BF balance out the range a little more and really explore how River works as a character when she isn't with the Doctor, maybe set some stories prior to Darillium.
The trouble is, if they don't have River interacting with the Classics in her own range, where would they? I've seen some listeners say they would drop the Main Range if New Who elements bled over, not all fans like all periods of the show and for some there are still very much barriers between 1989-96-2005...
I've had a thought about it and although the Doctor has appeared in The Sarah Jane Adventures and Class, and those appearances were great, there must be a line between spin-offs and actual Doctor Who i think.
The Doctor was only in 1 episode of Diary 1, and for Series Two (according to Vortex) Seven is in ep1, Six in ep3 and two Doctors in ep4. I'm looking forward to it as a mesh of eras and another multi-Doctor tale. By the sound of things River's solo for ep2 and it's all from her point of view.
I think because of that format it earns 'from the worlds of BBCtv's Doctor Who'. I think they'll try and get her with more Doctors (Davison, Tom, Treolar) but maybe she should get companions or enemies instead? A lot want River to meet Jack & Benny - River is a popular character, more sellable due to her TV history.
After thinking about it the one New Series range which should be labelled Doctor Who rather than a spin off is 'THE CHURCHILL YEARS' - all of them feature the Doctor and the format is a middle ground between the CCS and EAs. The covers should feature the sidebar.
I think it strikes a nice balance in not overly focussing on the Doctor. It definitely felt like it's own distinctive series and I was happy to see River taking such an active lead rather than pining for her erstwhile husband. Oh and slight side note: Signs is fabulous! Listened with almost zero knowledge and was blown away.
First, let me say that I haven't heard any River audios yet, as I'm working my way through earlier Eighth Doctor stuff, and can't comment on their nature or quality. But I do hope to see the character have her own stories, completely apart from the Doctor. Having occasional appearances with various Doctors is certainly cool and great and well within the purview of the series, but letting River have her own life is far more important to me...as time went on, the show just treated her more and more like a plot device instead of an actual person, and that (through no fault of Alex Kingston) was disappointing to me. I'm hoping that Big Finish gives her better treatment as a character than Big Moff has...
Actually, upon reflection, I think future box sets will probably be a lot less Doctor-focused (and I doubt the next box set will feature him at all). Telling 'big' stories with her character with The Doctor was part of her launch here at Big Finish and the possibilities of what that represents.
I'm a bit worried, upon reflection, that this thread might look like I'm accusing Big Finish of sexism . It's just my prefered taste in spin offs that they develop and focus on the titular character and any overlay with the original show be a bit more minute. That wasn't the aim (kind of the accidential and incredibly bad timing of the Oliver Harper thread last year in which a lesbian character was killed off on a popular US show, which I didn't know about and by all accounts Big Finish handled the death of Oliver with far more sensitivity and understanding then this show did).
I think both sets have been very good and both have demonstrated two different types of stories that involve the Doctor.
They justified the one installment with the Doctor in the first set by having him happen to be solving the same mystery as River without meeting. The second set justified heavy Doctor involvement from two incarnations with it being one big story.
Personally, whilst I thought the second set was better, I think I prefer just the one episode / story with the Doctor per set, or no involvement from him at all. I do think we will see the Doctor in the next set, and perhaps the one after, until they've got Tom Baker and Peter Davison on board.
If it wasn't I wouldn't buy it, otherwise you've just got another Benny Summerfield.
Exactly, we already have a load of Benny cd's. And to me, River was pretty much a Benny ripoff to start with, only difference is the doctor's each of them seemed to hang out with. I would love to see River meet 7, 7 says "you remind me a great deal of someone, hmmm. Oh dear."
I think so long as most of the stories in the box set feature River on her own adventures, I don't mind the Doctor showing up for an episode or two. Then again, it just depends on the story. Series 02, I felt, completely justified including the Doctor(s) in the story while still keeping River as the central character. So, really, I just want the Doctor to make less frequent appearances in future box sets. That way, when the Doctor does show up, it'll feel a lot more special.
Besides, there are a lot of other characters in the series I'd LOVE to see River team up (*cough*Benny*cough*) and LOADS of monsters I'm excited to see her face on her own (Weeping Angels, Sontarans, etc.) that I think would draw in all sorts of people.
I suppose it couldnt happen until River's ticked all the Doctor boxes she can. But I'd really like for there to someday be a set with just Amy and Rory as her 'companions.' If possible one of the episodes set on Earth that could also involve Brian. Maybe even Anthony (Amy and Rory's son from the unfilmed but od Angels Take Manhattan) if River can find a way to cheat a full family reunion.
Who are they all as a family and adventuring team when Eleven isnt around sucking up all the oxygen?
