A Class discussion thread for: Brave-ish Heart [Part 2] (S01E05) + next week's Detained (S01E06). Reaction participation for the previous episodes hasn't been overwhelming, so I'll thread double up on its last 4 stories.
Will April recapture her heart in tomorrow's Brave-ish Heart?

Quite a weak story I thought.

Brave-Ish Heart
Almost a season finale feel but not quite.
A definite re-set button thing going on which is odd because they've barely had character to engage with, but now we're in a place where you wondering why 3 of them aren't walking away.
As for other 3 slightly more interesting:
Quill genuinely seems aggrieved by Charlie's lot treatment of her class or their race, so that if she killed him it would be social justice rather then murder, however the Shadowkin deserve to die and the prince has the means but not the b***s to it.
As the pressure builds Charlie's royal contempt grows their joint dynamic could be good if they were played with more believability .
Which leaves the Frenchman as bland as bland seemly undercutting this almost tension.
Next week's ep is apparently all about secrets they've been keeping from each other ( and hopefully the audience).

Brave-ish Heart was so much better than last week's episode, although the pacing was all over the place. My favourite episode so far is probably Nightvisiting.

Overlooking the unrealistic single-handed defeat of an entire Shadow Kin army by April, in spite of her temporarily having "chosen one" special abilities, I found myself enjoying the Brave-ish Heart episode of Class. It was a rare instance in my new series Doctor Who universe experiences where I felt the second part conclusion was better than the opener (here's disappointingly looking at you: Death in Heaven and Part 2 of The Zygon Inversion). Dark Water and Part 1 of The Zygon Inversion conversely were strong opening stories, and the Co-Owner of a Lonely Heart (Part 1) Class episode was pretty feeble entertainment to begin with. Moreover in reverse, the subject matter displayed in the preview of tomorrow's Detained does not naturally grab me...so that could illogically mean that it will end up being a GREAT romp! The same thing happened to me when I wrongly anticipated that I might not enjoy the "Doctor one-handed" Heaven Sent, which ultimately ended up being the BEST Doctor Who episode that I have seen in years!

Next week is what Quil was doing during this week.
So that leaves EP 8 to deal with the consequences of both situations.

Just finished watching Detained (it's still Saturday night where I live), and I must say without any reservations that I found it to be good entertainment! I now understand what you mean Mark. Next week's Quill focused episode ( The Metaphysical Engine, or What Quill Did) will reveal to us what she was doing, while her star pupils were Detained in detention - 2 continuously connected stories with contemporaneous events. Saw films III and IV utilized that same technique of storytelling.

Ram referencing Lord Of The Rings as "some old movie my dad likes" and April never having heard of the films (or presumably books) either is a rather odd thing to throw in. I can't imagine that the Jackson films are completely out of the consciousness of today's 17 year olds especially with The Hobbit films only a couple of years ago.

These kids may be an exception there. I can tell you right now that I don't know a seventeen-year-old who hasn't at least heard of Lord of the Rings. In fact, I think more people have seen it than they have the original Star Wars film.

That's my point I think in trying to be cute Ness has tossed in a reference that doesn't work at all. It's a minor line, throwaway, but it's the kidn of line that makes suspension of disbelief hard - especially since this same group of kids were chatting about Buffy, a show a good few years older than LOTR, only a few episodes ago.

Detained: Clever concept for a bottle episode, as those so often end up being truth-telling sessions anyway. Too many of the truths were relationship-based for my liking, but hey, that's teens. All in all, this show is more a hit than a miss IMO - certainly has my attention more than Torchwood's first season did.

Know it's a bit late as I haven't been watching Class as it airs but hope to finish the show before the Christmas Special, just finished Brave-ish Heart and while it is heavily flawed with nearly half of its main characters not being characters (Charlie and Tanya are the worst offenders with April as a close second) and cringeworthy dialogue and too much exposition it was good. Not great, but good.
