I continue to hope Tim Trelor makes an appearance as the 3rd Doctor in this. It just seems so right.

Why do I get the feeling that Benton is going to be able to keep his plans with his wife?...

I've just finished Call to Arms... What the %&*^ is going on with the Silurian characterisation? Doctor Who and the Silurians and Warriors of the Deep are among my favourite and most watched stories, and I'm no stranger to the New Series episodes featuring Silurians. At what point did they start hissing like Ice Warriors, and when the hell was it thought that they howl like wild animals when they're "hunting", which, again, is something that seems entirely outside of the way the Silurians have ever been portrayed before (at least on TV). I'm led to understand that these are a group of warriors... well, they seem far from it; the New Series Silurians have lasers, so where the hell are they? Why the hell are they using bows and arrows, even if they're in some way electrically charged/powered? I really struggled to get into this first story at all for this reason - these things don't behave like Silurians, and it's pulling me right out of the story. There are very, VERY few Big Finish stories that I've simply not been drawn into, and I'm really disappointed to say that this is one of them (bringing the list to about three stories, I think). I hate to say anything negative about any release, but the inconsistencies are just terrible. Having said all that, I'm hoping that I'll be able to adjust to this for the rest of the set. I've been looking forward to this release since it was announced, and I want to try and not let these problems prevent me from enjoying it; I think it was more a matter of simply not expecting it. I'll be ready for it for the rest of the set though

Re. the difference in these Silurians. Science fiction is too often "speciesist" - it assumes all members of an alien species are identical. There's a comment about the Silurians in this script that plays that up: 'they are a peaceful species' - as if any intelligent species could be uniformly peaceful / warlike / 'good' / 'bad' when it is made up of individuals with their own ideas and very probably many, many sub-groups with their own cultures and politics - just like us. (Daleks and Cybermen have removed that inidividuality.) Malcolm Hulke did it properly of course; the Silurians are people with their own politics. In 'The Silurians', the reason the Brig eventually blows them up is because their old, peaceful leader has been murdered in a coup by the new speciesist leaders who see all humans as usurping apes, to be destroyed without mercy -and they've already tried twice. Their leaders were reptile Nazis by the end of the story, but not all Silurians were like that. 'Call to Arms' follows Hulke's lead very well, I thought. UNIT encounter a known Silurian extremist group and their leader who the Doctor (somehow) warned them about. Grand Marshal Jastrok says his followers will 'hunt' in their traditional style, with bows - and the howling, I assume. (Like people 'hunting' foxes on horseback, wearing red coats and blowing horns, because they did hundreds of years ago!) Jastrok is obviously an ultra-traditionalist, maybe from a different Silurian 'nation' than any we've met so far, hence the different voices/accents of his followers. He's clearly a very evil Silurian dictator, a proper 'monster' for UNIT to take on. If he was a second wise old Okdel, we'd have a four disc peace conference to look forward to - inspiring perhaps, but maybe not so good for sales!

I listened to the 1st half of this today. I really liked how Benton and Yates were brought into this. Benton owning a pub is definitely a much better profession for him than a used salesman. And I loved the scene when Yates gave Benton the service rifle that was a very moving scene. I did sort of feel that the first episode jumped into the action a bit too quickly for my tastes though. I prefer when things start off slowly and then build up. But there were still some nice character moments spread out. And it's great to have Sgt Benton back with Captain Yates. It feels so much more like the old UNIT Team. We are just missing the Brigadier. But having his daughter continue his legacy feels fitting.
The second episode I really loved. Jo and Osgood had some great interaction. How could you not love Osgood fangirling over Jo. I loved Jo saying she was wrong to underestimate Osgood because people had done the same to her. And I just loved Jo talking to the Sea Devils at the end trying to find a peaceful solution. While listening to that whole scene I thought the Doctor would be so proud of her. In fact she reminded me of the Doctor there. I don't think he could have done any better.
Just like the last UNIT box-set made me think of modern events with the presidential election so did this one. We are talking about the Silurians and Sea Devils not all being the same and how a lot of Science Fiction forgets to make their alien creatures diverse. But speculative fiction is also a mirror into our own world and this reminded me of the constant message that people who practice Islam are not Terrorists. It's just a group of misguided people who follow a warped form of the religion.
Next up episode 3 and 4.
