Through literally hundreds of interpretations across more than a dozen incarnations, what do we believe are the quintessential elements of a Doctor? The core personal traits that bind each iteration to one another, despite their differences and the ones that we could not see the Doctor without.

A good actor, who has a quirk, and slight sense of humour.

This is actually a harder question than it would first seem. If I were to get down to the Time Lord who calls himself the Doctor's core traits, I'd say they were intelligence, a rebellious streak, disdain for authority, and strong convictions about the way the universe should be. I'd say the convictions developed over time, though, not being as present (or being suppressed, perhaps) until he met Ian and Barbara and was slowly inspired to become "The Doctor."

A noble brow? Clear gaze - given a few hours sleep, that is. A firm mouth? A face beaming with a vast intelligence?

An actor who can be handed a script of a horro filled story and find in it a way to play their character in such a way as to be the literal embodiment of Nightmare Fuel Retardant. Look at it like this, Image of the Fendahl scared me witless as a wee child. But, in the middle of that terror was Tombo being noble, heroic and clever, so despite the terror there was something that kept the terror at bay.
