How much, if at all, do you need to be familiar with Big Finish's previous Sixth Doctor stories to understand what's going on in The Last Adventure? Or will listening to it spoil earlier ones? Etc. etc. - basically how safe am I diving into it without having heard the vast majority of Big Finish's stuff? (I'm up to about the 2004 main range stories - I have a lot of catching up to do - but dipping into later things if they look interesting, and I've heard good things about this one.) I know the answer to this question varies an awful lot with Big Finish Doctor Who - lots of stories are self-contained, others are part of big arcs - so I thought I'd ask. If it makes any difference, I'm not sure this really counts as a spoiler, but I already know {Spoiler}the Sixth Doctor starts travelling with Charley at some point.

Well, it stars three Big Finish companions (as well as Jago and Litefoot) - but they're all accessible stories. There's a little bit of continuity mentioned with Charley but you won't be lost - and the release came out before Constance was even introduced in the MR!

I'd say no previous listening is required, but hearing a few other Sixth Doctor stories before does make listening to The Last Adventure a lot more meaningful.

I would say the Charley parts are the only confusing bit. Personally, I thought that using Charley was a bit of an odd choice for a boxset that you'd think would get a lot of casual buyers interested. It should still make sense, though.

Welcome to the Forums
There's definitely no need for prior BF Listening required to enjoy it.

I think you would find it a more enjoyable experience to hear Trial of the Valeyard first.
I liked The Last Adventure but found the first three stories to be superfluous. Ultimately only Briggs's story, The Brink of Death, is necessary to understand the goal of the Valeyard and Sixie's regeneration.
The absence of Peri -- how could they do a celebration of Sixie without Peri?! -- and the addition of a slightly boring companion who had yet to be properly introduced (Constance) didn't help.

Ive found out that there is very little BF stuff that you have to listen to before anything else... Only stories like Gallifrey and Dalek Empire, and stuff like that needs to be listened to in order, with the exception of the some of the CC's and they catch you up pretty good.
I do agree with escalus5 though, Peri should have been in the Last Adventure, and BF screwed the pooch on that decision.

I saw 9 replies to the thread before he committed to buy the cd.
Hey BF, I think we should each get a 1/9th credit toward of choice of a free 2 disc cd, and when we get to a full credit, it should be sent to us, shipping and handling excluded, no purchase necessary, void where prohibited, not available in some states, no substitutions, we do not endorse this add.

Charley's episode is kind of important to listen to to understand a lot of what's going on in Brink of Death. Constance's episode is worth listening to just for the villain, and having Flip meeting Jago and Litefoot was very fun.

I listened to it without having listened to The Trial of the Valeyard and didn't feel I was missing anything.

I listened to it without having listened to The Trial of the Valeyard and didn't feel I was missing anything. Yeah. I've listened to both, and I didn't feel that Trial of the Valeyard added anything. Its worth listening to, but it isn't really essential.

I thought The Last Adventure worked remarkably well in the stand-alone sense (give or take the original series because I think it does a bit of playing to people's sentiments there). I don't think Trial of the Valeyard is needed to appreciate The Last Adventure although I'm very glad I listened to it as sort of a warm-up for TLA, just because I thought Trial of the Valeyard is really good plus it was fantastic to hear the cast that it has.
