Today I've been watching "The Queen's Gambit", which I absolutely loved. 'It might be because I watched it in three chunks, but that certainly did not feel like a little over six-and-a-half hours!

Hello again. Loved Quantum Leap, an interesting concept with two lovable main characters. I was rather disappointed with the final episode, I wonder if anyone has any alternative endings?
Blackadder, ooh yes, particularly Blackadder Goes Forth a funny yet ultimately poignant reminder of the futility of war and the sacrifices made by ordinary soldiers, some of whom were only teenagers. General Hospital is a great episode. I liked all the Blackasdders and enjoyed Miranda Richardson's portryal of Liz I as a shrewd yet spoilt, slightly psychotic lady hilarious. I was disappointed with the finale at first, but I came to understand it with time. IIRC they didn't know for sure that the show was canceled, so they had to leave it somewhat open in case of a sixth season. As it stands, I don't think it's too far-fetched that Sam would just go on helping people. That's who he is. As for Blackadder, Queenie might be my favorite character of all. Completely mad! Quantum Leap: "Blind Faith" - Gee, it's a good thing Sam's talents extend to being a concert pianist! Chopin the guide dog is ten kinds of adorable! Blackadder: "Goodbyeee" - As the esteemed doctorkernow mentioned above, it's a funny yet poignant way to close the series. But quite honestly I dread it every time because it's so sad. I have this thing, you see, about inescapable death. Stories about death row prisoners, executions, or in Blackadder's case, being sent to die with no way out. It always gets to me. I have this vicarious panic, the feeling of being trapped. It's very effective just not very pleasant! Star Trek TNG: "The Enemy" - I love Worf's refusal to donate his blood to the Romulan. I mean, ethically I think it's wrong. But from a storytelling standpoint? It adds a lot of complexity to Worf's character - he'll do it if ordered, failing that the answer is no. It's a brave choice to have one of our characters make such an immoral choice out of pure hatred, and stick to it. The Pollyanna Federation of the first two seasons is fading fast.

Since it is on German Prime starting from today, came home from work and started on Star Trek Lower Decks. First impression- loud slapstick. Seth McFarlane does it better. I went into this expecting something in the style of Family Guy (which sometimes comes close to utter genius even if I have never been a fan). But the writing does reach to those levels.
But this is my very first episode, so maybe they improve as they go along.

WandaVision
Episode 3
The ‘70s sitcom pastiche is good fun but it’s those last few moments which really make the most impact. Can’t wait to see where it’s all going.

Today I've been watching 'Fate: The Winx Saga'. Whilst I'm not going to say that it's the best thing I've ever seen, it was still an enjoyable enough way to have spent an afternoon/early evening. 'To be honest though, I was expecting a feature-film, not a 5hr mini-series...

Hello again. It's a Sin: Classic Russell T Davies. Brash, confident, funny but with impending sense that tragedy is coming down the line. The episode introduces the characters and sets up the themes of the series. Parental disapproval about your choices, societal attitudes, the freedom of being 18 and in a new city and the terrible pain of losing someone close. I loved the idea of this huge house with all these vibrant characters, all with hopes and dreams. Seeing the story of these characters is going to be the meat of this series and it will be interesting exploring their journeys. The Eighties setting was very drab which contrasts with joyous abandon of the gay scene and young people partying. It was like time-travelling, forty years? For me it seems like yesterday living in freezing High Wycombe as rather odd eight year old. We didn't even have a phone in 1981! The soundtrack is full of Eighties classics, the episode closed out with the haunting Smalltown Boy. Looking forward to next week.
EDIT: There is a fascinating interview with Russell T Davies in the Guardian, as I read it, I could just hear his voice.

Quantum Leap: "Good Morning Peoria" - A solid gold classic. With rock n' roll stories, there's always some fuss bucket who thinks it's their job to decide what you can say and how you should live. And there's nothing quite so sweet as joyful rebellion. Let's do the twist. Star Trek TNG: "The Price" - A wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant? Well, be careful what you wish for... Kind of a boring episode. Really only notable for setting up an equally boring Voyager episode. Red Dwarf: "Backwards" - Two classics from two shows in one evening. That barroom tidy is a thing of beauty. And poor Cat. Poor, poor Cat...

Thanks for that - probably the best summation of Queenie in Blackadder the Second I have come across. Bang on. "I may have the body, of a weak and feeble woman. But I have the heart and stomach of a concrete Elephant! First I am going to have a little drinkies, then I am going to execute the whole bally lot of you!"

WandaVision episode 3. More of the same, pastiche a certain decades sitcom then throw viewers a bone at the end to keep their interest. Too slow. Life on Mars did a similar protagonist out of time/what's going on idea far better.

The Bleak Old Shop of Stuff (2011) - Christmas SpecialBought this DVD at a Barnard Castle* charity shop between lockdowns for 99p. Has a 60 min special and three 30 min episodes. I was aware of its origins as a Radio Series (Bleak Expectations). Beyond that it knew it was a parody of Dickens and his verbose excesses. I always thought they would be a bit wearing once the joke wore off. Was pleasantly surprised that it had an original and involving storyline that drew in so many tropes in an affectionate manner and was not merely scattershot. It ensured that you wanted to know how things wrapped up and tied together, even as you saw the 'coincidences' signposted. A nice reminder at how good Mitchell & Webb are as a double act and the guest cast was a testament to the quality of the script. Will be looking forward to the three episodes that followed and will look again at getting the radio series. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bleak_Old_Shop_of_Stuff*prior to Dominic Cummings putting it on the map, Dickens himself visited there when researching his novel Nicholas Nickleby (and Master Humphreys Clock). On the drive there and back, I always pass a small hamlet called Wackerfield. I recently twigged that it was his inspiration for the name of the character of Wackford Squeers, the Headmaster in Nicholas Nickleby.

Quantum Leap: "Thou Shalt Not" - I had no memory of this episode whatsoever. With Sam leaping into a rabbi and being unfamiliar with Jewish traditions, I was expecting a fish out of water comedy, but instead, it's a fairly serious story about grief.
Star Trek TNG: "The Vengeance Factor" - A stupid script with stupid characters behaving stupidly. I tend to think of Season 3 as being a strong contender for TNG's best, so I tend to forget about the handful of less than stellar (ha ha) episodes.
Red Dwarf: "Marooned" - I tried eating dog food once, when I was a kid. It was just a dry biscuit. Tasted pretty much like it smelled. Not very enjoyable.

I watched Season 3 last year and went "what one was that?" after reading the Memory Alpha wiki entry, I can safely say I remember about two seconds of that episode. For the better, I think... Quantum Leap was great at telling those very human stories but I don't remember this one either! (It's been a bit longer since I watched those though! I'll have to go through them again one of these days...)
