Apparently there is an American tradition of putting a gherkin ornament on the tree. Legend has it that this was originally a German tradition, but no German I have ever asked ever heard about it, and I also have never seen it. So at a guess, someone made that up.

Wikipedia says it's a German-American tradition but not a German one. So Germans who migrated to America? Sounds like it might have been a commercial ploy by an American company to market glass ornaments from Germany, from what the article (and other articles I've found) says. To be fair, people hang all sorts of ornaments from their trees, many of which are things I'd never think of.

I actually think these things are cute and the idea of hiding a gherkin in a tree is great, we would have loved this as kids! I actually might just buy one and START the tradition here with my nieces and nephews (I actually just bought one on Amazon, this will be fun!).
More fun than the boring old baubles any day!

On my MARVEL Facebook group someone just asked who the mysterious old man with glasses was that had a cameo in every movie.
...
Well, about time that person joined the group and summoned up the courage to ask.
