Ok so after watching Stuart Hardy's tongue and cheek review of he story I want to gauge how many people actually have semi good things to say. Honestly Troughton is good in this one and the music is good but the rest of the story is really some of the worst Doctor Who.

Put me down as a fan. Vintage space opera. It totally suffers from the lack of the visuals. If this story is ever found, there will be a major re-evaluation. Mark my words.

Its definitely Robert Holmes weakest script but taking into account it was filmed at the same time they were rehearsals and location filming for The War Games, it stands up ok. Its strength unfortunately is obviously in the visuals, as the surviving Model Shot footage is quite impressive.

If we ever get the visuals I may change my mind, but I hated the Space Pirates. Its the only really bad episode in what is otherwise one of the strongest seasons of the show. I don't really remember any of the details, but I remember that I found it boring, and that I found the guest cast annoying.

It's not one of Bob Holmes's finest, but you can definitely see his deft hand at characterisation peeking through from beneath. The main problem I think is that the Doctor, Zoe and Jamie are so far removed from the events of the story (even counting stories like Revelation of the Daleks) that it actually starts to feel painful by Episode 3. It feels a little too thin on the ground for six parts, it could probably have done quite well within the span of something like four. It's one of the very few Holmes stories where you feel as though not enough is happening.
That said, it's still got its moments. Madeleine's imploring conscience to the cowardly Dervish is a very nicely acted moment, as is Zoe's shocked outburst of "You murderer!" when Jamie is shot down on the spot by Clancy. The incidental music manages to be stiff competition to the absolutely marvellous renditions in The Invasion and The Seeds of Death and what little surviving footage shows that it was more than competently directed.
