Over on Gallifreybase they usually have a recurring thread after new episodes entitled something like ''What did the kids and the "Not We" think of "The Return of Doctor Mysterio/Heaven Sent/Rose'' etc, the point being to find out non hardcore fan, or children's points of view on new episodes, it's usually really interesting reading as more casual fans seem to have much more widespread points of view, and often seem to enjoy episodes that hardcore fans are hardest on.
I sometimes feel that as fans we have a biased point of view, judging episodes based against a wealth of previous knowledge about the history of the wider show, often getting wrapped up in the continuity or references and forgetting to think of more casual viewers.
Would you agree?
So as an experiment I thought it could be fun if some of us pick a random TV (or even Audio or prose) story and ask family and friends who are more casual viewers what the think of it.
I watched The Return Of Doctor Mysterio with my sister (who has seen most of the Tennant, Eccleston and Capaldi episodes, and usually enjoys them but has little interest in the wider franchise and rarely rewatches stories, to her it's just an hour of fun escapism) and she throughly enjoyed it (as did I) but several hardcore fans I know hated it...

I had a weird flip moment. I was okay with it, my sister (who I guess is part of the casual audience) was really dismissive about it.

Me and my wife both loved it...
Though the science of it was pure BS.

Though the science of it was pure BS. That's true of all Doctor Who.

Though the science of it was pure BS. That's true of all Doctor Who. Some of it more than others. That reference to Minkowski space in Cold Fusion (amongst other places) is a real theory grounded in mathematical physics.

My parents watched Mysterio last night and thoroughly enjoyed it-they've also enjoyed the majority of the Capaldi episodes (bar Heaven Sent which they skipped as the trailer made it look 'boring and confusing') and liked many of the Tennant and Eccleston episodes (they are both old enough to have watched at least some of 60's Who live as it aired, and occasionally rewatch old episodes if they happen to be on TV but both are very casual viewers) though neither was keen on the Matt Smith era (I think, like me they stopped watching regularly part way through Series 6).
They've also heard the odd clip of various McGann BF stories if I've been listening to them on BBC radio etc and we watched the TV Movie a few months ago, as more casual viewers neither has any interest in the radio stories but they both agreed that McGann was a very good doctor.

Me and my wife both loved it... Though the science of it was pure BS. Honestly, I might get some hate for this but sometimes I enjoy it when Who tosses all scientific knowledge out of the window and just has fun with the format, I think Moffat was well aware of how camp and daft some of the science in Mysterio was, but at least he and the cast seemed to be in the joke and were having fun with the material, some of the more po-faced and deadly serious episodes have bored me solid...

Who doesn't have any scientific knowledge to toss out the window. Its about a time travelling alien, who changes his face when he dies, lives in a box that's bigger on the inside, and carries a tool that can do pretty much anything. The entire premise is absurd. The absurdity is part of what makes Doctor Who such a great show.

Exactly, in many ways I'm glad this is a franchise with such diverse stories and tones over the years, the quality isn't always the greatest- for every Genesis of The Daleks there is a Fear Her but it's remarkable it's lasted this long and can still find new ways to entertain (or enrage) the viewers/readers/listeners.

I haven't actually seen the Christmas episode yet due to a satellite dish dysfunction, but from the comments I suppose Moffat will probably manage to offend my scientific sensibilities, if I in fact actually have any, as he has numerous times. That's actually very difficult to do as I don't actually demand scientific accuracy from sci-fi - but if you're going to get so far out there as ask me to believe things like the moon being able to sprout wings and fly away without perturbing tidal forces and so forth, it does somehow suddenly seem like asking me to suspend my disbelief a little too much. It's enough to start me making lists of all the absurd things I've already been asked to believe by the series, which thankfully I otherwise never do as it immediately takes most of the fun out of it.

My fiancee didn't care for it. I wasn't far off of that - I thought it was fine and laughed in places but probably won't watch it again. When I compared it to the TV Movie in terms of its nonsense and camp, she said she liked the TV Movie more. Do with that info what you will.
