About an hour into it now. Bedford is such a nasty, heinous, capitalist alpha male and utter jerk that I'd consider turning it off now if the Professor weren't there and he weren't as hideous while narrating.

Idk, maybe the Invisible Man spoiled it for me but I just... did not like this one. It was boring. It was good but ugh I was bored. And then there's the fact it ended with my biggest pet peeve, a cliffhanger with no foreseeable conclusion in sight.

Well, I really enjoyed it! At least, I have so far (I'm at the end of part one). I find the performances and sound design top-notch. Nigel Planer plays his part with the necessary eccentricity but resists the temptation to go too OTT, and Gethin Anthony is very good as Benson. The adaption has breathed new life in this less well-known (at least by me) HG Wells story and made it fresh; I can't imagine how it could have been done better. Unless they drop the ball in the second half, I rate this very highly indeed.

H.G.Wells was not (to put it mildly) fond of capitalists so he would approve of your reaction! I'm sure they will have toned down some of the political content for this series, though for the most part his science fiction novels only hint at Wells' extreme left-wing (and extreme science) views. But a great author and futuristic thinker, even when we strongly disagree with him.

Greatly enjoyed this release. I'm going to have to go back and thread the book - I honestly can't remember when I read it last.

I enjoyed this even though I have never heard of the story before. I thought it was very funny in parts. I don't know about anyone else, but while listening to them building the rocket, taking off and landing all I could think of was Wallace and Gromit, A Grand Day Out. It had me laughing quite a bit. I assume this is where the idea came from. I kept hearing "Cheeeeeeese Gromit!" in my head.

This was pretty good. I had an issue with the ending - I wasn't all that bothered with the cliffhanger, but I'm not sure it ended true to the character of the Professor. I liked the performances well enoigh and the story was pretty interesting, especially in Part 2.

This was my first time experiencing this story and personally I loved it. Granted so much sci-if was built on HG Wells works so of course some of the stuff in this story is very recognizable and doesn't feel original (despite the fact it actually is). However I was surprised how much of the story I didn't expect in the end.
I also like the sense of wonder, excitement, and danger that is present in these classic Sci-Fi stories. From a historical perspective it's interesting to listen to a story about the 1st Men on the Moon before that feat was actually accomplished.
As for the main characters personally I liked them both. They were so different that they worked well together. Wish there had been some sort of reunion or perhaps learning from each other. I think that perhaps that would have happened in a more modern story.

Maybe I need to come back to this in 4 years time? Bedford left a very bad taste in my mouth.

Wasn't there a BBC production a few years ago with Mark Gatiss and Rory Calhoun?

Wasn't there a BBC production a few years ago with Mark Gatiss and Rory Calhoun? Rory Kinnear - though I'd like to see Calhoun do such a British piece It was for BBC4 - low budget but pretty cool. The 1960s movie with Lionel Jeffries was very cool and came out on bluray a while back looking better than ever.

Yeah, the Lionel Jeffries / Harry Harryhausen version would have been one of the first movies I ever saw.
