What if...Doctor Who exists as a TV Show in-universe?
What if...Sydney Newman got the idea for the TV Show in the Whoniverse because he was visited by the first Doctor and each subsequent 'show runner' has been visited by the incarnation/s they have written for?
What if their encounters with the Doctor/s are what inspired their stories during their time working on the show?
I told you it would be the craziest Doctor Who theory you've ever heard.

Is that why the Eleventh Doctor was able to visit the set of The Tenth Planet? And if that was true, why can't the Doctor just go back in time and save all of the missing episodes?

I found one bizarre (and well-written) piece of fan fiction which explained that An Adventure in Space and Time took place in the Whoniverse (so it was the real eleventh Doctor at the end). Basically the Doctor decided to cover up his presence on Earth (as part of his pre-Series 7 deleting) by making up a fictional TV show based on him, since he couldn't delete records of his presence due to their importance to Earth, thus there is a TV show called Doctor Who in the Whoniverse.
It was an odd read.

It was an odd read. It's a bit ironic that bit of deleting if you read Transit where the Seventh Doctor is bothered by the same thing and threatens Stone Mountain's sentient AI to obliterate all knowledge of him or he'll reveal its unlawful existence to the prejudicial human race. All record of him is wiped from their archives, but nearly half a dozen incarnations later he's back to doing it all over again. Doctor Who is a funny old creation because Prof. Bernard Quatermass is a real world individual there and Terry Pratchett's Discworld exists for real as well since the Eighth Doctor (or one of his previous selves) has visited it. That's just the straightforward stuff, Blake's 7 exists as both a fictional television show and a "real" terrorist group fighting against the fascist Federation and Doctor Who is definitely fictional show in Star Trek (the Fifth Doctor turns up as a holographic recreation in one of the Kirk era novels), but not the other way around. Even the dreaded Marmidons from Blackadder's Christmas Carol get a look in with their alien culinary customs (it is extremely rude not to serve part of yourself at the dinner table apparently), there's intertextuality absolutely everywhere. Clara being Susan's mother is probably the most bizarre I've heard. It and Mary Poppins being a Time Lord based upon her ability to jump into paintings. |
