After reading all the gushing reviews, I saw that the film was in previews this weekend, so went and saw it. The first ten minutes probably live up to the reviews... the rest is quite good, but it's not comparable to "The Lego Movie" (and anyone who is expecting to see the Justice League to play a big role, like in some of the posters, will be disappointed). Also got some characters who aren't owned by DC in it. {Spoiler} Yes, it's the sensational return of the New Dalek Paradigm! Once again, Warners team up the Daleks with a bunch of other monsters without using the word 'Dalek' or crediting anybody or getting Nick Briggs to do the voices. Actually, they look pretty good, and the voices aren't too bad.SPOILER

{Spoiler} They only say 'Exterminate', but not in a Nick Briggs-y ring-modulate-y way. It's a lighter, more roboty voice, but way more Daleky than those voices from the TV movie back in 1996. The Daleks are not credited, not even named ('British robots') and I didn't spot anyone familiar in the additional voices list in the credits.SPOILER

Shame they didn't get Nicholas Briggs onboard.

I really liked it - but I agree as a "Lego Movie" shared universe film it doesn't quite come off. Mostly because the idea of Lego being used in-story as building and creating isn't really a big part of this film wheras it was the focus of The Lego Movie. This, really, could have been largely done in any animation style without changing much. It didn't "need" the Lego connection and didn't seem to care for it much. The writers clearly know their Batman and their DC and they were much more interested in making a film having fun with the history of Batman than with the possibilities of Lego. Still - it's bags of fun and is easily the best Batman film since the Dark Knight Returns animated adaptation in 2012. Some lovely digs at the current directions of the DC movies will delight more than a few forumers

I just love Will Arnett's version of LEGO Batman. Can't wait to see this at the cinema.

Yes, whereas "The Lego Movie" was a movie about Lego, and attitudes to Lego, "The Lego Batman Movie" is a movie about the character of 'Lego Batman'. It's not a Lego movie about the character 'Batman', if you see what I mean.

It's not a Lego movie about the character 'Batman', if you see what I mean. That's valid, but it may as well just be an animated film then and drop the Lego connection. The Lego Movie set up a unique multiverse of its own - to not use that is fine..but its clear the writers and directors have little to no interest in the Lego aspect of the deal

I had similar opinions. The opening sequence was absolutely bonkers, and it's still a good movie after that, but I don't think it quite reaches those heights again.
It lacks the emotional core of the Lego Movie, but it's still very entertaining.
The voice work was very good, but I think Jenny Slate was badly miscast as Harley Quinn.

I think Jenny Slate was badly miscast as Harley Quinn. It was certainly a different interpretation of Harley's voice than we are used too, but I think it was still good.

It's not that she doesn't sound like Arleen Sorkin, which I'm not sure I would want anyway. Nick Briggs said that he's not a mimic and he's not going to try to pretend to sound like Eccleston/Tennant/Smith for the new range, but rather he'll attempt to capture the essence of the character that those actors were playing, which is, in my opinion absolutely the right way to approach it. It doesn’t help that Slate does a lot of voice work and each voice sounds exactly like every other voice she does. When Harley Quinn sounds exactly like Bellwether who sounds exactly like Princess Pony Head, there is a problem, and that problem is not that I’m a grown man and I just typed “Princess Pony Head”. The problem is that Sorkin defined the role to such an extent that her voice is one of the defining characteristics, and Slate doesn’t even give us an acknowledgement of that.

I don't know anything about Princess Pony Head (is that a MLP thing?) but she gave very different performances for Belwether and Harley. Harley, like always, was completelt bonkers and completely in love with the Joker. Belweather was a much more timed character (until the reveal) and had to deal with being stepped on by the mayor all the time. The voices were the same, but the performances were completely different.

Love Batman. Hate Legos.
Despite being a life-long Batman fan (and despite the decent reviews) I still can't bring myself to support this whole Legos nonsense by seeing this film. Rarely have I been this conflicted about a movie!

I don't know anything about Princess Pony Head (is that a MLP thing?) It's from Star vs. the Forces of Evil. Jenny Slate has a recurring role as PPH. Probably not something I would watch if I didn't have a ten-year-old, but more than tolerable. I felt at first the show was trying too hard to (a name like Princess Pony Head is the definition of trying too hard), but recently it seems to have found its groove and it's establishing an interesting mythology and telling some more complex stories.
