I liked Rose when she was traveling with the Ninth Doctor, but I felt like a lot of what made her likable wasn't there when the Tenth Doctor took over. She wasn't as "snippy" with the Doctor anymore and I really missed that dynamic. Her characterization didn't feel right either. I felt like she became almost "arrogant" in a way and very selfish too.
It didn't help that all of Series 3 and 4 were still hung up on her. Her shadow hung over Martha until she flat out left and then we had the season long build up to her return in Series 4.
Basically, a lot of the problems most people have with Clara are the same problems I have with Rose - though, strangely, I wasn't bothered with Clara.

She was certainly a flawed character, but flawed in a human and realistic way. She wasn't perfect, could be selfish and self-absorbed, but she also had a lot of noble qualities, and I do like her character over-all. I don't even really mind her return and Doctor clone husband in Series 4. (The problematic nature of falling in love with a near immortal alien could have been presented a bit better.)
It's the Doctor's pining and putting her on a pedestal in Series 3 that rubbed me the wrong way. Like, it made sense from a story perspective, and lead to a couple decent charactermoments, but it just wasn't worth the irritation. It just made the Doctor seem like a knob. Especially the crappy way he treats Martha.

My feelings towards Rose are cyclic. I loved her at first. She had pluck and agency, but more importantly, she was a great audience surrogate, which is what the first companion needed to be on the revived series. I can't remember when I started actively disliking her, but I know that I really enjoyed this exchange from Bad Wolf, so it must have been by then: The Anne Droid: So, Rose, what do you actually do? Rose Tyler: I just travel about a bit. Bit of a tourist, I suppose. The Anne Droid: Another way of saying unemployed? Rose Tyler: No. The Anne Droid: Have you got a job? Rose Tyler: Well, not really, no. The Anne Droid: Then you *are* unemployed. And yet you've still got enough money to buy peroxide. I just downright hated her by the time the love story angle was front and center. Now, though, I'm thinking that she wasn't too bad. I suppose part of this is the natural tendency of Doctor Who fans to retroactively appreciate older material when we contrast it against whatever's bothering us about the current output. How do I feel now? Rose had the difficult job of easing new viewers into a new era of Doctor Who and I think she achieved that admirably. I also think that she overstayed her welcome, but that's hardly a problem unique to Rose.
I see that dialogue more being part of RTD's mantra of 'other ways to live your life' etc and easily applied to The Doctor, though.

Especially the crappy way he treats Martha. Mmm, I did like Martha's decision to get out while she still could, though. That to me was a very strong character moment for her and a pretty important step in the Tenth Doctor's development. He was actually rather good to her when it didn't come to the romance, he treated her with respect (as he does any companion) and praised her whenever she did something courageous or noble. I see that dialogue more being part of RTD's mantra of 'other ways to live your life' etc and easily applied to The Doctor. That was something I still adore about the RTD era's approach to humanity, which is symbolised pretty well in that the Daleks from The Parting of the Ways are half-human. As a species, we are basically self-absorbed trash monkeys who shouldn't have been allowed to leave the solar system. However, we are capable of so much more when we actively push ourselves to do better and find something meaningful. We can't erase our basic nature, but we can certainly rise above it.

Series 1 ep 7 The Long Game - Adam steals advanced technology that would change Earth future. Banished from TARDIS! Series 1 ep 8 Father's Day - Rose interferes with history, almost causing the destruction of time. Not banished!

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I thought that was obvious.

I thought that was obvious. Makes it even worse for Rose! Then, there is the scene in School Re-union. Now, that Rose is in love with the Doctor, she has a one-upmanship arguement with SJS. (Admittedly, neither come out good in this badly written scene). Why the jealousy? Did Rose think she was the first ever companion of the Doctor when she travelled with number 9?

The episode also made it pretty obvious that Rose did think she was the first ever companion.

Series 1 ep 8 Father's Day - Rose interferes with history, almost causing the destruction of time. Not banished! I made a similar observation on another thread but without the comparison to father's day. The Doctor was so obviously fixated on Rose from very early on, which just didn't feel doctorish. From the word go he was jealous of any men who showed any interest in her (Adam, Micky and Jack). It made the whole girl companion thing feel a bit sordid.

The one-upmanship scene doesn't work for me because only the audience are in on it. There is no reference point for each companion to compare aliens/villain they haven't met! And, I don't like the bitching (from both) in their first scenes!
