Can't they announce the next Doctor whilst they're at it too? No. That would undercut Capaldi's last season. No announcement until between that and the special please. Did David Tennant being announced as the Doctor affect how people watched the Eccelston episodes?

Looks like plenty to get stuck into this year, I've been a big fan of the Capaldi era so I'm hoping it keeps up the standards and ends on a high. I've no worries. Very much looking forward to seeing Nardole develop more.

Or Adam Mitchell.... Could it be another companion who's not cut out to be a companion? Although Nardole didn't seem like that in The Return of Doctor Mysterio, so who knows? I'm hoping for a nice balance between companions, an optimist and a pessimist each with the Doctor right in the middle. What about an optimist and a pessimist and Nardole in the middle (middole?)

When did we discover Capaldi and Tennant were cast? Capaldi was at the start of Smith's last season and IIRC we heard Tennant was cast near the start of Eccelston's run.

Great trailer. The only part I'm not sold on is Pearl Mackie as Bill. I mean, she might be better in the actual episodes but in both this and Friend From The Future she just doesn't seem very convincing at all to me.

No, Capaldi was announced a few months after Matt's last season - only Day and Time aired after the announcement (both of which Capaldi appears in). And I don't think the BBC had much choice when it came to the Eccleston / Tennant situation.

They'd just launched Rose to massive success and the very same night the Redtops get the story that Chris had quit. At a time when the show was mere hours old and there was no precedent for a modern audience that regeneration was a thing, it made sense to get David's name out there as soon as possible to let the public know the show wasn't going to be a one season wonder. I think it was only a day or so after Chris quitting, so 2 days after Rose aired, we knew about David. That situation bears no similarities with the modern day and how we now know Doctors are announced. We have a pattern and the public know the main star leaves but the show goes on. In March 2005 that couldn't be taken for granted. And yeah, Capaldi was announced in August 2013, well after Matt's last series finished in the May.

I've just looked up the dates of the announcements - Chris leaving was announced on 30 March, David being the replacement was announced on 16 April (the day of Aliens of London). It's easy for me to remember when Peter was announced - it was the day after I was on stage interviewing 12 DW companions at once and my opening question was 'who would you like to hear announced?'.

I don't think it's a Weeping Angel either. With the ancient Roman styled curled hair, I wonder if it's an Axon? Hello again. It's funny you should say that, Doomlord. The Radio Times have been mentioning Axons as well. The title of Rona Munro's story is supposed to be The Eaters of Light, coincimuch? The trailer, is interesting. We shall see, what Series 10 brings. Let's hope Capaldi's final series is superb, with a great TARDIS crew and enjoy the fact that at long last, Doctor Who is back on Saturday night and its about time...

Do you, or anyone else, remember if David's name was mentioned before that? I feel like - and the memory cheats n'all that - that I read about his casting in the Sunday Mail, which could have been the 17th of April I guess but I seem to remember knowing Tennant was coming in pretty much right away. Was it known he was cast before an official announcement?

I'm getting a Jo Grant vibe almost. I'm getting a Martha Jones vibe, although it was the opposite problem for me there. I liked Freema Ageyman, but not her character.

A related memory - I helped arrange David going out for drinks with the Edinburgh Doctor Who local group when he was there in a play. He later said he spent the evening wanting to tell them he was going to be the new Doctor but knowing he couldn't. Actually I have a postcard he sent me from that play tour, I must look at it to see how soon after 16 April it is dated.
