There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Couldn't find any evidence from the sixties? There's always David Whitaker's novelisation of The Crusaders.

You on the right forum, son? You do know what this one is primarily about, yeah? As its been said before, this forum isn't just about Big Finish! Primarily it is or Doctor Who in general!
But its fast becoming a place to drop loaded comments on a variety of subjects and wait for reactions and when that side of the debate believe they're Absolutely Right,(despite reasoned opposing views) and must have the last word, its equal parts fascinating and frustrating to witness.
Regards

Couldn't find any evidence from the sixties? There's also this gem from Doctor Who And The Daleks: “Why is she being so unfair?” [Susan] cried out at last. The Doctor patted her arm and started to follow in Barbara’s footsteps. “She isn’t being unfair, Susan my dear,” he said quietly. “Miss Wright is asking questions and that is a different thing entirely.” “What questions, Grandfather? I don’t understand?” Neither did I for that matter, so I listened as carefully as I could without giving away that I was in any way interested. “Oh, she knows the answer already. The trouble is she doesn’t believe it.” I saw a look pass between the two of them then Susan glanced at me. She said, “Oh, I see.” I didn’t know what they were talking about.

This forum that rose from the ashes of The Big Finish Forum, and is named for a Big Finish story arc? Cool. What even attracted you to the forums in the first place? Did you get banned from Gallifrey Base or something? If not, since you have nothing to add about BF, zero interest and really just want to come here to slag Nu-Who you'd enjoy yourself a lot more there. You'd have more people to wind up, and get even more reactions - you'd love it.

Guys, enough of the baiting already! If you have nothing of value to contribute to the thread, don't contribute at all!
Action will be taken if you ignore the rules, and ignore requests from Moderators.

I didn't mean to cause any baiting and I am sorry if my posts about Ian and Barbara being romantically linked did. It wasn't my intention, I was just trying to point out that the classic series did romance too.

The difference I can see is that the romance was never really addressed, whereas nowadays it would be. Also, I think romance (or possible romance) between companions is different to romance between companion and Doctor. Cheers Tony

It wasn't my intention, I was just trying to point out that the classic series did romance too. I enjoyed how low-key that ultimately was (even if I don't buy that they remained young forever, I think that Ian from the bookends for The Crusade video is how he looked at the time). There didn't need to be any overstated misunderstandings, taunting for the shippers or otherwise, it was just there as subtext to the character's actions and their reactions towards one another. Implicit relationships are often the most interesting like the one between Nyssa and the Doctor where I swear he's almost like a stepfather to her or Peri wherein both incarnations he's almost the older brother. One of the more obvious examples is the Seventh Doctor and Ace for that surrogate father/daughter relationship, right down to the fissure that develops between them that later on they have to mend.

There are many, many examples of romance in classic Doctor Who, from the very badly done (Leela's sudden departure) to the best - Jo Grant's various 'conquests' finishing with Professor Jones.
Yes of course Jo and the Doctor were very fond of each other, but in a strictly Platonic way. Jo was close to a romantic departure from the series more than once and I think her final choice speaks volumes about why she adored the Doctor.
She didn't want the soldier (Mike Yates), the aristocrat (Peladon) or the freedom fighter (Latep) (each like an aspect of the Third Doctor) although she clearly found each of them attractive. No, she wanted the scientific campaigner and when she found him in young, human form, Jo was in no doubt.
Not 'soapy', not overplayed but part of a great story and with a heartbreaking ending as the Doctor heads off alone, again. First class writing and better than any of the new series 'romances' if you ask me.
