Oh, apologies to fans of it but I've always thought that "The Doctor is the Other is some much more inscrutable thing" to be such BS. For me that actually detracts from him as a hero. Well, everyone's got their own quirks. I've been writing up a piece of fanfiction and grown really fond of Frobisher's nickname for Peri being "Perp".

Blimey, what a list. I certainly intend to absorb this more tomorrow when I have more time, but immediately - 'The Underwater Menace', 'Image of the Fendahl' and especially 'The Curse of Fenric' stand out as really good examples. I can't imagine Andrew Cartmel never read any Lovecraft! Thanks for the link. I saw him at a con and meant to ask him about it, but I only had one chance for one question and I wound up asking him about Raine instead. I did pick up a copy of his book and in it he mentions The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, so we can presume he's acquainted with Lovecraft's works.

He seems a widely read gentleman, does Mr Cartmel. I'll have a write-up of the con visit eventually, but I tried to catch all of his panels and he really impressed me with how broad his knowledge base was, and how deftly he kept panels moving. Facilitating these things is an underrated skill. Also, someone asked him "Why a baseball bat?" in Remembrance and he said "Because it's an offensive weapon that's easy to acquire and doesn't look like a weapon." I thought, "What a cogent response." However, he lost points for not recognizing my Whizz Kid costume, but regained them later by complimenting my t-shirt after I changed.

The more I hear of Andrew Cartmel, the more impressed I am by him. I think he did wonders with Doctor Who back in the 80s. He brought a new direction to it, which after 23 years, I imagine wasn't easy. He remains knowledgable and enthusiastic about his time on the show. The podcast featuring him being interviewed by Toby Hadoke was great listening. The only thing he did that I didn't really care for was his series of Lost Stories for Big Finish. Promoted as a possible 'Series 27', it wasn't really to my taste.

Ugh. I just finished listening to the Lovecraft Ezine Podcast's alleged "Lovecraftian influence on Doctor Who" podcast. Rambling, incoherent, badly researched (what story features the fourth Doctor battling Omega? Which episodes of 'Class' have Anthony Head in them? What has explaining the War Doctor got to do with the subject at hand?) - good grief, they only mentioned "All-Consuming Fire" in a Sherlock Holmes context! There's a lot more knowledge on the subject in this thread. Don't recommend this at all.
