...but didn't, for whatever reason, and now won't because they've passed away.
Basically who do you think would have made a great guest actor on the show? I have a list in my head but I'll start with a single name, though some of our friends across the sea may not recognise it. James Hazeldine. A compelling actor, I first saw him in Chocky, a show which was well creepy to see as a kid. I later saw him in a rerun of The Omega Factor (yes, that Omega Factor, John Dorney plays his character's son) and he was on fine form. He mainly worked in TV, though he appeared alongside Tom Baker in Nicholas and Alexandra, he played Stalin. I don't recall them having any scenes together though.

Well, he aint passed away, but he should be at the top of everyone's list, IMO, there is only 1 icon I can think of when I think of British actors, only one man who is known in every part of the world, well, every part with a television, only one man who introduced the world to England.
Sean Connery!

Sean Connery! While you may be technically correct, I think he'd grimace at that, being a Scotsman and so on!

Connery was already making his 3rd Bond film, Goldfinger, when An Unearthly Child aired so he's always been far too big to appear in the show. He may have, if the show was on a few years earlier as he did BBC work - and if you haven't seen him playing Shakespeare inAn Age of Kings you're missing out - but that boat had sailed.
David Jason is the kind of actor who could easily have worked on the show before he became a star in the early 80s. He was already a well kent character actor for the entire 1970s so you'd imagine he's someone who would have been thought of. I think he's also spoken of being open to New Who for his young kid, but for whatever reason that's never happened. Michael Mackenzie (Ace Of Wands), Barry Morse (Space 1999), Richard Greene (The Adventures Of Robin Hood), Roy Marsden (The Sandbaggers), Peter Egan (Every Decreasing Circles)...they're the kind of actors you'd think would have popped up at some stage and I'd imagine they'd all been considered at some point.
The biggie for me is the late, great Ray McAnally. He would be among my top choices to have been in the show. Of the actors still working, it'd be Roger Allam.

I am glad that TP McKenna DID do it, though I'd have preferred a better role for him.

Admittedly, though, it's unlikely. John Cleese in a proper role would also be welcome.

Alan Rickman and David Bowie come to mind. I've heard that Bowie was almost in Androzani and that could have been incredible but it's a shame neither had the chance to give us a definitive Doctor Who villain part.

It's really hard to see anyone other than Christopher Gable playing Sharaz Jek, I think Sting was also considered as a possible candidate as well... Interestingly, Donald Pleasance was a potential candidate for the role of Griffiths in Attack of the Cybermen. I'd have loved to see Ed Bishop, Francis Matthews or seen another appearance by Shane Rimmer on the show. Who else... Ian Hendry would have been lovely, David McCallum, Martin Landau, Keith Szarabajka...

Its a shame Edward Woodward didnt do any episodes as far as i know. He would have been a great choice no matter who he played

I know he voiced The Great Intelligence but I'd love to have seen Ian McKellen in the show. I think he would have been a fantastic Doctor or a brilliant villain or anything in between. I think he still could now! Ian McKellen for the 13th Doctor!!!
