There is one interesting way of doing it which I think was overlooked for the anniversary... The Doctor has a diary and Stephen Beckett from The Kingmaker has often come up as a suitable imitator for Eccleston, so why not have later incarnations begin to recount his exploits from torn pages scattered in the hereafter and slowly shift into a voiceover? If there's a desperate need him to appear on screen, just show the back of his head, hands and the jacket. That could have been interesting, but it may have been seen as recasting Christopher Eccleston. True, but then that could be said of John Hurt's appearance as well. After all, the War Doctor is essentially the Ninth Doctor's understudy, it's why he exists in the first place.

I don't see it like that though, I see it more that John Hurt is a Doctor we would have if Doctor Who was a blockbuster movie.

This is going to seem a bit cheeky, but isn't that technically Peter Cushing? :3 Dr. Who and the Daleks was the twentieth biggest film of the 1965 British box office.

Peter Cushing's Dr Who was a different character to the TV Doctor. Depends on how exactly you interpret the character. There are lots of little ways to incorporate him into canon if you really wanted to, just as there are means to put in the once canon Richard E. Grant incarnation. If Doctor Who had been turned into a Hollywood blockbuster, we could have fared quite well with John Hurt in the title role. I'm dying to see what John Carpenter's Doctor Who would have looked like.

George Lucas said that he was a big fan of the original series, so we'd likely have seen something very different to what's on screen now. J. Michael Straczynski of Babylon 5 fame would have been terribly interesting given that one of his biggest idols was Terry Nation.

His company Amblin would have been involved with the proposed series following the TV Movie. There's concept footage of Spider-Daleks, which look pretty cool.

Doctor Who Magazine did a pretty good job at realising them for Fire and Brimstone as well. I hope they would have steered clear of the reboot idea that the Leekley Bible suggested. A story inspired by The Talons of Weng-Chiang set in 1930s New York sounds a great deal more interesting than a straight remake. For Earthshock, they could've gone heavily into The X-Files route and had the palaeontologists (or whomever) cybernised, their attackers' numbers growing each time one of their team are dragged off never to be seen again.

Yeah, the remake idea is a terrible one. I wouldn't mind a Marco Polo sequel but exactly the same story? No thanks.

The Loose Cannon reproduction of the story had two bookends with Mark Eden recounting the adventure as a much older Marco Polo in a journal in Venice. I like to think that sometime in his travels, the Doctor came across the original journal and it now occupies a nice little corner of the TARDIS library.

I reckon the Cybermen will play a similar part to Dark Water/Death In Heaven, and I'd be fine with that. I thought they were used well in that two parter. It's definitely one of the scariest new series stories to use them. They didn't even kill the cowering guy in the morgue for crying out loud! Surely the Cybermen are capable of having their own series finale? That was Danny, so a perfectly good reason not to kill the morgue guy. You'd think, wouldn't you?

While I'm defiently longing to see John Simm play The Master for Big Finish and see what Big Finish will do with his incarnation (John Simm has expressed he wanted to play the part more traditionally) and as much as I'm looking forward to the momments of comedy gold his TV return will involve:
JOHN SIMM MASTER: I HAVE A PLAN! MISSY (drily): Oh, do, tell me, ducks.
, I'm worried he's going to be overshadowed by Gomez.

It's not Michelle Gomez's fault if she has the better written Master.

I posted this on the Wretched Hive of Scum and Villany: Zombeevers: Ohh you're both here as well. Is the Velvet Smog here too? Missy: YEPPERS! His TARDIS is disguised as a tree. Or he's disguised as s tree. Whatever floats your goat. ohh Hello: Ooh hello my sexy future self. And my less than sexy past self. Ohh watch out, here's Blondie. Blondie: The Drums... Missy: ohh he's stuck in a loop, poor dear. Blondie: THE DRUMS.... Zombeevers: yes, we all hear the drums. It's why he's dressed as a Shrubbery and she's .... why exactly ARE you licking my TARDIS? Missy: I haven't seen the old thing in decades. Zombeevers: Well stop it, it's unhygienic.

Her activities as the Master have been completely nonsensical I disagree, Michelle Gomez is much better written. John Simm's Master was too 'obvious bad guy', whereas the Doctor and the Master have always been frenemies. Missy and 12 are a return to that.
