Grrrrrrr!!! In the end the delay is going to give this release more notoriety if they aren't careful. They might have been better off swapping it with one of the forthcoming releases and citing production issues or something.

At this point I fully expect The Lovecraft Invasion to be released next tuesday with no announcement whatsoever. Oh well. Can't be helped. I'm not sure I totally follow the logic that releasing a story on the last day of the calendar month would necessarily reduce the amount of attention it gets. If I was BF and I wanted to release it in as low key a way as possible I would release it at 8am one day, then release something much more high profile at 10am the same day, then make a big announcement at noon on that day. Hopefully that way The Lovecraft Invasion would be more likely to slip below the radar.

I mean the subplot of the story will see "the TARDIS team will also have to deal with the author’s troubling socio-political ideologies." So it will probably cause reaction from some quarters whenever its released.

But they could've done that 3 weeks ago, no harm no foul, if they do that now it raises eyebrows, the sneak release is the only option left. Regards mark687

I would point out there's no actual evidence that the release has been delayed because of real-world events. Things have been coming out very slowly this month, probably to give CD orders a chance to catch up now the warehouse is open again.

Given Torchwood was released on a Friday before any Doctor Who release, June was an odd month to begin with.

Regards mark687 I don't see why BF should be embarrassed about it at all (provided that it takes an anti-racist line, which knowing BF we can be fairly confident it will). Why not just put it out with a fanfare and make a virtue of its topicality and its anti-racist line? Of course, if they did that they might be accused of cashing in, so maybe that's not such a good idea . . . .
If I had to guess I would say it will likely get an outraged reaction from some people who never listen to BF and have not listened to the play. This will be followed by a response from people who have actually listened to it defending it on the grounds that it takes a strong anti-racist line and Lovecraft's views are condemned rather than condoned. Then it will all blow over.

Exactly, people seem to be adding 2 & 2 together to make 5 with this release. The tv show Lovecraft Country is still on schedule to be released in August, which looks like it deals more head on with the issues of racism alongside Lovecraftian lore.

I dropped in to see if the collective wisdom of DU had any clues to the question of the moment: where is our MR release for June! FWIW I agree with the suggestions made above about possible (how many times has the MR been this late without a word said on the subject?) reasons for the delay - and isn't that a very sad comment on where we are?
If the delay is down to "caution" (and we don't know this do we) then it is very sad. We're living through the Reign of Twitter, when one flicker of guilt - real, alleged or assumed - in the opinion of the 'the righteous' (I should perhaps say 'the Left-eous' ) is enough to send their accused to the reputational 'guillotine' without possibility of reprieve. It is not the way a noble cause should be pursued.
I can't say that Lovecraft interests me either as a person or an author, his monsters are not my style, but I have every confidence that BF will have created a story which shows the Doctor and friends putting all those monsters firmly in their place and making a fine piece of Who drama out of it all. The Doctor is the champion of freedom; let us hear his latest battle ASAP.

I just sent an email to the podcast asking about the delay. Let's see if they answer it.

Yes indeed. Everyone is so happy to be outraged by something at the moment when I'm sure if they had a good look in the mirror they may not see a halo staring back at them.

I think we will only find out about if current affairs had an impact on the MR release after we have listened to it... But I cannot imagine BF would release something too controversial... although it might upset the usual suspects who had already promised us time and again they would boycott BF from now on.

To be fair, there is a lot going on to be outraged over. I would hope that BF deals with Lovecraft's problematic background in an adult way and even if it goes out of its way to deal with it, the timing of the release with the events sweeping through America & other parts of the world was always going to be an issue. If indeed that is the issue. It is damned irregular for the MR to hit so late but if they are holding out to the end of very end of the month, does it really matter? They were respectful of a movement. That isn't the worst thing in the world. And to the post above mentioning the upcoming Lovecraft Country. The novel is recommended and very much tackles racism and is being produced by Jordan Peele, so probably a much different dynamic at play there. Like the recent Watchmen series anticipated history that would happen nine months later, Lovecraft Country is going to see almost prescient.

I can't see that it would be at all reasonable to delay any of these Lovecraft projects just on the basis that somebody might be offended by his offensive views that are being tackled. But as far as BF is concerned, you know how superficial some BF fans are, let alone DW fans in general ('CDs temporarily delayed? I'm sorry that BF is closing down'), so there's a danger if it came out on time it might be percieved (wrongly) as cashing-in on current events.
