It's got the I Ching! One of the more interesting things about 1897, this must be the first time its come up in the audios. One of the short stories would be an ideal way to use it again. Another thing from 1897, body switching, only more tragic.
One of Benji's diary entries is dated 1855 (the line is misread as the implausible 1885 in the story), so it probably takes place 1856, around then.
More Arthur Darvill as Tad please. Maybe even a young man Daniel, Edward or Roger. Maybe Tad is helped by the ghost of Josette.

Thanks for reminding me of this release. There are (thankfully) so many Dark Shadows audios now, that there's often at least one that urgently requires a re-listen. And this is the one for tomorrow! Arthur Darvill and Katharine Mangold are excellent in this, really very good indeed. The story is equally as enjoyable - I don't quite know where it fits choronologically in the series, but that kind of thing rarely bothers me anyway. The story is the thing - and this has it all - scares, twists, drama, tragedy: the lot. Thank you, Mr Handcock.

None of that is relevant to the story though, this is an entirely self-contained story.

One of the many things I love about the DS audios is that some of them make sense within the context of the televised episodes I have seen. Others, like this one, are during a time I haven't reached yet on television (I'm still ambling through my DVD collection and loving it). And yet they are still 100% brilliant in their own right. As I've caught up with moments represented on audio, it has added an extra dimension to my enjoyment of both. It's all good!

I'm currently on the Leviathan storyline, and finishing 1897 helped me to appreciate to the audios that followed on from that a lot better. The Doll House is one of those stories.

So, it seems in honour of the upcoming Halloween, Dark Shadows has been selected as the audio for Big Finish's The Listeners this month. They've picked "Speak No Evil" starring Arthur Darvill and it's available for £2.99 on download here. Thought I'd start a thread in case anyone fancied discussing it!

(relocated from other thread)
It is at the top of my list to recommend to people with no experience of the series who want to try the historical era (rather than modern). This is because it was a good stand-alone story which introduces and establishes elements of the series and seems (from my perspective) to have a broad enough appeal to be appreciated by many potential listeners.

Just listened to this recently and loved it. An excellent choice for the October Listeners spotlight. It's creepy and there's a lot of great character work and excellent performances.

It certainly helps that coulrophobia, the fear of clowns, is certainly back in vogue as a fear for horror writers of both page and screen to play upon.

I suspect Big Finish were very careful about the selection, for sure.

It's a good one - plus it's nice to hear Arthur Darvill in a role different from those I'm used to seeing him in. Excellent choice for a standalone story that might be some people's first Dark Shadows, although perhaps so standalone that the listener has no obvious place to go. But it's not necessarily an obvious starting point either, and will hopefully give people impetus to try some other releases as they didn't find themselves lost
