If you're British and aged between about 45 and 60, chances are that Monday and Thursday teatimes meant 'Blue Peter' as surely as Saturday meant 'Doctor Who', with the A-team of presenters: Valerie Singleton, Peter Purves - and John Noakes.
If you could climb it, swim it, walk it, abseil it, slide down it, jump out of it, make it or bake it on live TV, probably while accompanied by 'Shep', his friendly Border Collie, then John Noakes did - and made it great fun for viewers to watch and learn.
Sad to hear of his death after enduring years of illness; a childhood TV hero for me and millions of other viewers, part of the classic 'Blue Peter' team in the 1970s Golden Age of BBC children's TV.

Very sad, to hear of his passing
One of the saddest pieces of TV I have ever scene was when the hideous Anne Robinson made him cry being cruel about his relationship with his dog shep.
RIP

Co host Peter Purves has said that John's alzheimer's had reached serious levels. How very sad. RIP, John Noakes.

Hello again and welcome to Blue Peter!
I really liked John Noakes. His boundless enthusiasm and double act with Peter Purves, really broadened the appeal of Auntie Beeb's flagship children's show.
His other partnerships with canine stars Patch and "Get down" Shep were also legendary. His touring programme Go With Noakes was also brill.
The original Blue Peter action man he did everything asked of him but was not blase about the risks he took. An able communicator he used his acting skills to present a version of himself, a loveable fool, that was left at the studio when he went home. He leaves a wealth of happy memories; including the Lulu the elephant episode will be shown for years to come.
While sorry to hear of his passing I am relieved his terrible suffering with Alzheimer's disease is over. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones.
