For a great many children in the 1970s and 1980s, Brian Cant was like a loveable uncle with a penchant for awful puns. Brian Cant has passed away, aged 83 after a long battle with Parkinson's.
For preschoolers he was one of the dependable presenters on Play School with Derek Griffiths, Floella Benjamin, Johnny Ball, Carol Chell and Chloe Ashcroft.
For children who watched lunchtime TV he was the voice of Trumpton, Camberwick Green and Chigley.
For me, he was one of the joyous anarchists of PlayAway. This was a fast moving mix of awful jokes, daft songs and even dafter sketches. His rendition of the Playaway theme was the signal for twenty minutes of pure escapist nonsense.
Imagine my surprise on reading the original Dr. Who Programme Guides aged 9 or 10 to discover he had also been in my favourite programme. Brian played Kurt Gantry in The Daleks' Masterplan.
He said the one thing he wanted children to take away from his work was "that I made them laugh, I made them feel happy".
In 2010, he was awarded a Children's BAFTA.
Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

Trumpton! (Bell rings furiously...) ' Hugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grubb'! (For younger / non-UK members who think I've gone extra nuts, that was the roll-call of the Trumpton Fire Brigade, called out to save a cat up a tree (or similar) in every episode without fail. And like most of my generation, I was able to list their names without a second's thought after well over 40 years! Rote learning, works every time!) EDIT: Darn! It's ' Pugh, Pugh...' - they are apparently twins according to their creator! (See post below.)

The Internet says you are quite correct! - yet I was sure I remembered their creator being very specific about the exact opposite in a programme sometime. The things one learns on DU. (And now some analytics engine at Google will be noting an extra spike in search requests for 'The Trumpton Firemen'... ) EDIT: Hang on just a second (as measured by the Town Hall clock!) - seriously, who would give their twins the same name as each other except as a bad joke? Hugh-Pugh and Pugh-Pugh - the Trumpton twin dilemma...
