Jodie Whittaker is now firmly in first place at everywhere that's still taking bets.
I do hope those people who say they'll never watch again if the cast a woman stick to their word rather than spending the next three years complaining.

I've had a look at Kris Marshall's schedule. It's completely clear from what I can tell. He worked on Ugly Lies The Bone till 6th June... funnily enough when the Xmas special production began. And also I don't think we need to worry about him being worried about going to Cardiff. He lives in Bath and worked in London for some months for Ugly Lies The Bone. And Cardiff is a shorter distance from Bath than London is from Bath. I just hope at this point that it isn't Jodie Whittaker, since she's now, in my opinion, the artist who fits the role the least. We know. You've already told us numerous times about your dislike for Jodie Whittaker. Read the OP again.

What worries me - apart from them choosing somebody awful, of course - is that if they cast (say) Jodie Whittaker or Phoebe Waller-Bridge they'll be accused of racism; if they cast (for example) Chiwetel Ejiofor they'll be accused of sexism. Can't win (unless they cast Meera Syal, who I think would actually be very good - but too old, of course. So that's ageism, too).
But more importantly, which of the rumoured people have been in Big Finish plays (aside from Alexander Vlahos, of course) - we need to know what sale will succeed the Paul McGann one!!!
(Personally, I think Kris Marshall ticks more boxes than anybody else. That doesn't mean he's the best choice, but he seems the most likely of those rumoured. Mind you, who expected Matt Smith to be cast as the eleventh Doctor?) [I still reckon it ought to be Damien Lewis. Too old for 007 shouldn't mean too old for DW).

After weeks and months of reading speculation/arguing/campaiging about male/female/female/male/black/white/etc./etc. Doctors, I'll be underwhelmed by anything less than a colour-shifting hermaphrodite hexapod from Alpha Centauri... (Telepathic contact from Metebelis III: ' Six legs??! - the next Doctor should have eight legs - you leg-ist reactionary!') ... In all seriousness, however strongly views are held on who or what the next Doctor should be, please don't let our views lead us into either over-critcising or ignoring fellow fans with whom we happen to disagree on this one issue. There's more than enough of that in politics right now; if we want to disagree on something, fine, but let's try not to let it divide us on everything else too. I hope that didn't sound too insufferably pompous from a fairly new poster, but I've been on DU long enough to know what a special TARDIS this forum is among the Time War of 'social' media. Whoever the next Doctor turns out to be, I hope we can all travel into the future as good companions.

Don't really care to make a prediction. What I do care about is that they show is doing what it has always done, which is, re-inventing itself or, to go old school, renewing itself. It is a exciting time and while we all have favorites the main thing is that we will know who our new Doctor Who is going to be tomorrow.

Even the people most eager for the show to be more progressive casting wise realise, surely, you can't progress all the different avenues at once. A step in the right direction will be enough. Of course some will moan anyway but there's always those who do so not for legit reasons but to cause trouble. If we do get Jodie Whitaker not only do we get a wonderful talent as The Doctor but we'd never need the female Doctor debate to take over casting chat ever again. Imagine!

I don't have much, I'm afraid. Too many conflicting signals for me. My gut feeling is that it will be Paterson Joseph, but I feel like the fact that he's already been a favorite in years past makes him markedly less likely to be cast. On the other hand, he could be the black actor who apparently turned the role down, in which case he might have changed his mind. Then there's Alexander Vlahos, who feels right, but honestly I suspect that's dreamcasting on my part. Still, that's the best I've got, so Joseph/Vlahos it is! is that the guy from numberwang?

Kris Marshall seems like a likely choice but I'd love to be surprised with a female Doctor or a Doctor who wasn't white.
As much as I'd love Alexander Vlahos chances of it being him are extremely slim. He's still filming Versailles series 3 and is workshopping an upcoming play for next year.

is that the guy from numberwang? I hope you don't think of Olivia "Broadchurch" Coleman and Paterson "Neverwhere" Joseph purely as Mitchell & Webb's sidekicks?

I hope you don't think of Olivia "Broadchurch" Coleman and Paterson "Neverwhere" Joseph purely as Mitchell & Webb's sidekicks? no but im american and these actors everyone ,in this thread, are talking about, arent household names the way they are for brits. we only get so much of british pop culture even with the internet. i love numberwang im not even sure why its funny but it cracks me up. so yeah those 2 will always be numberwang to me. i still think of morgan freeman as easy reader from the electric company. its just one of those things.

If it's Kris Marshall I can only wish him well and hope the stories he gets are good, but as of right now, for me, he ticks NO boxes at all.

OK, I think a lot of people here haven't read the OP! I've read it, I'm just not a betting person, especially after Matt Smith.

OK, I think a lot of people here haven't read the OP! I've read it, I'm just not a betting person, especially after Matt Smith. I think it was more a reference to not debating the merits or lack thereof of individuals rather than to the point about betting. I can see the idea, make everyone give a final guess so someone can't claim they were right just because one of the thousands of names they suggested over the months was correct. It was never going to work though. In practise this thread has just replaced the previous one.

I'm gonna be honest here, I absolutely do. Even if Paterson Joseph was in a million things (even if he was the Doctor - which I would enjoy) I'd think of him as Simon who is from space.
