Nish Kumar's new show on BBC2 last night did an unsophisticated sketch last night about Doctor Who fans being scared of women. It featured a stereotypical (British) nerd who was said to be the person behind.... well, I don't want to get sued, so let's just say it's a real-life internet forum notoriously not as nice as this one.

Scared of: Drahvins, yes. The Rani, obviously. Tegan, goes without saying. (Which is more than she does...)And I'm sure we all remember shuddering with fear during the Second Doctor's 11-part epic battle against The Terrible Zodin, one of the highlights of the entire monochrome era in my opinion. Though I seriously doubt those who were making fun of 'Doctor Who' fans have ever bothered to watch it; if they did, then they would understand. And with a bit more viewing, they might also understand how 'Doctor Who' has been promoting a positive image of women for more than fifty years already, from Barbara to Bill. As the last male head of UNIT might have said: Splendid chap-esses, all of them.

Funny sketch, and a fan site has reached new levels of notoriety when it's being mocked in mainstream comedy shows.

Sketchy on details for being half asleep when it aired, but @midnight on Comedy Central last night seemed to be paying a fair amount of attention to there being a new Doctor.

Nish Kumar's new show on BBC2 last night did an unsophisticated sketch last night about Doctor Who fans being scared of women. You don't have to look too far to find plenty of examples that prove it's not far removed from reality.

Is it possible that some 'Doctor Who' fans who are known for being fans (rather than known for being people who happen to be fans) are not the most perfectly representative sample of all fans? And always remembering that many 'Doctor Who' fans are female - are they 'scared of women' too?!

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

How do you feel about the portrayal of wealthy people in Monty Python's Upper Class Twit Of The Year sketch? It's much the same thing.

As far as I can remember, the Pythons were sensible enough not to portray purportedly real people. Especially not purportedly real people associated with something that was started after its predecessor thing collapsed in a scandal amid accusations of bullying and threats of litigation. (And, no, quite often Monty Python material isn't particular sophisticated).

(And, no, quite often Monty Python material isn't particular sophisticated). "Purportedly real people?" Like: Sam Peckinpah's Salad Days? Novel Writing With Thomas Hardy? ("It's Tess Of The d'Urbervilles all over again.") Cyril Connolly in "Eric The Half-A-Bee." Nietzsche, Marx and most of western philosophy on a soccer team together. Whistler and Wild insulting royalty and twisting them into compliments. The Pythons were all over "purportedly real people" all the time, and a lot of their humour is amazingly clever, just presented in ways that aren't particularly sophisticated. But again, how do you feel about them having a go at an ENTIRE SOCIAL CLASS OF PEOPLE in the "Upper-class Twit Of The Year" and not have anyone kick up too much of a stink about it because it was using some well-known stereotypes about people based upon the sense of entitlement that their social status brings. And I think that people associated with "bullying and threats of litigation" deserve to be sent up as well. (Sorry if I went a bit over the top there - I know that you weren't expecting the Spanish Inquisition, but who does?)

Well, most of them were dead, and none appeared in the sketch you mentioned! And, to the best of my recollection, none of these sketches really can be established as a parallel. Now, if they'd done a sketch about Harlan Ellison, we might have something....
