ok this question applies to super heroes in comics, on tv , and in the movies. or any other platform they are in.
i have noticed in the comics from the big two ( marvel and DC) super heroes call each other by their first names, and not their code names. all the time. especially in the big event books.
in the marvel movies everyone is known by their real names.
during flash season one i read an article from female tv, and not a comic fan, deriding barry for not telling iris his secret. it was clear from the article that she really liked the show but was not nor interested in comics. i bring this up because their
are non comic book super hero fans all over the place now and they most probably outnumber the traditional comic fan. they are talking about characters that started in comics but that made the leap to the big and small screen as well as video
games, in somewhat different ways. they arent stepped in the tropes of comics. those tropes are pretty much gone in comics as well i believe.
here is an example of what im referring to when it comes to super hero tropes started in the golden age carried thru to both the silver and bronze ages. basically from the 40s into the 2000's
issue 1 jimmy jones accidently or randomly recieves super powers and becomes super duper man. the origin story. but weaved into that origin will be super duper mans supporting cast going forward.
christopher reeve first supes movie and tobey maguires first spidy movies are perfect examples of a hero's relationship to their supporting cast.
supes moves to metropolis gets a job at the daily planet falls hard for lois meets jimmy olsen and perry white. later he saves the day and none of those people know clark and supes are one in the same.
peter gets bitten by the spider gets superpowers and tells NO ONE not his aunt not his uncle or his best friend harry oh and he also has a huge unrequited crush on a girl, mj, just to make sure the audience knows as mr plinkett says
he has a case of the not gays.
in comic books there are stories galore about super heroes doing wacky things to protect their secret ids. being in 2 places at once if you are supes or flash. having a superhero buddy pretend they are you ect ect
sometimes they are fun, and other times you just throw up your hands and say "come on how can anyone fall for that?!" superman probably has dozens and dozens of those type of stories.
so back to today and non comic but super hero fans, and writers. they dont seem interested in following that formula. going back that flash fangirl, she was insulted for iris, that barry trusted pretty much everybody else but not her.
they steps he went thru and the excuses to protect his secret idenity as the flash not only weren't entaining for her but were really annoying to her.
the cw is a good real time borameter for this. on smallville how long did it take for lana or lois to find out clark's super secret? how many fake outs did the show have? holy smokes lana found out oh sorry last minute maguffin his secret is safe
again. i cant remember when cloe found out but it wasnt season one. that show milked the reveal over and over. compare that to flash and arrow.
so what do you think of my theory ? tia
