Hi all. If anyone's interested in seeing some draft and evolving versions of covers, which originally appeared in my Finished Product fanzine, if you pop over to Twitter and follow me, @finishedzine, you'll be in for a treat. I'm also sharing a few old Big Finish adverts, the DWM strip previews, etc, if you fancy a trip down memory lane. Cheers, Kenny

Cheers, Kenny I'm not on twitter, but this is really interesting stuff, thank you for posting this As someone who wasn't aware of the series in the wilderness years, it's kinda strange to see the initial announcement and realise how exciting this must have been at the time, how far BF has come since then:! (If anyone is still in doubt there's the proof, BF was canon from the start! ) I wasn't aware BF initially planned to tie in the McGann releases with the novel range (though I've previously read Sam Jones was initially planned to appear in the Sarah Jane audios?) as a huge fan of the EDA's that is really surprising as I've long hoped to hear more of Fitz on audio, (don't get me wrong, I've liked or loved almost all the BF 8th Doctor stories, but that scruffy rogue is still the definitive 8th Dr companion i.m.o), I was under the impression the novels were declining in popularity by this point, Gary Rusell later wrote in that scene in Zagreus which implied the novels were in a separate continuity, seems a little risky to try and tie in the audios with the novels this early on... Do you know if the initial plan to do audios with Sam and Fitz slotting into novel gaps? I'm wondering what changed when McGann signed on as I've only read that Charley was planned from the start, Was it just deemed easier for BF to do their own thing or were there rights issues with BBC Books? (sorry for all the questions!)

Hiya. Yes, scenes were originally recorded with the Sam Jones character, but these were rewritten and re-recorded to introduce Ellie Martin.
As I understand it, the intention was for the novels and audios to have a vague link, as Gideon Crane mentions Sam in Minuet in Hell. However, this was later retconned with the creation of Samson and Gemma, in Terror Firma. The line in Zagreus set the different continuities apart, but not invalidating any either.
Charley was initially planned to be a travel agent from the 21st century called Kirsty, before the plan was changed to create Ms Pollard.

Blimey this takes me back, i remember having a sneaky read in WHSmiths while waiting to be served & shouted out "freaking awesome" when i read this article to the wary stares of many customers.

I also remember saying that i don't think Doctor Who had a audience anymore let alone a audio one, "they'll probably do a few then it'll stop" I've never been so glad to be wrong although my wallet might disagree.

I don't think anybody thought when they got that first Big Finish Doctor Who CD ( The Sirens of Time) with the 1 on the side in their hands we'd be here at #228 nineteen years later, plus all the extra stuff in-between. It's been an amazing journey, I am so glad there was an audience for official Doctor Who audios.

Oh, wow... The Veiled Leopard feels like such a long time ago...
...
I suddenly have the urge to do a marathon of the Five/Peri/Erimem stories again.

I have to say, I really wish that the silly "canon war" around the time of Zagreus didn't happen and the comics, novels, and audios linked a little more closely. That seems to be where we're at now with Big Finish adapting the novels, Company of Friends, and the TV show referencing The World Shapers of all things! I just wish we'd gotten there a little earlier. I'm certainly glad we got Charley and not Kirsty, though.

That seems to be where we're at now with Big Finish adapting the novels, Company of Friends, and the TV show referencing The World Shapers of all things! I just wish we'd gotten there a little earlier. I'm certainly glad we got Charley and not Kirsty, though. That said, IIRC the infamous line in Zagreus didn't even separate the canon correctly it specifically stated none of the alternate universes was more primary or correct than the others and occasionally crossed over with each other and garbled the details in the process (i.e the Doctor sees himself cutting out his own heart, when in the novels it was Sabbath who did it), more the point the Doctor was a raving loony through most of that story. I personally agree with Moffat in that it's impossible for a show about time travel, time wars and parallel universes to have a hard canon, I consider every story equally canon/non canon Fitz is every bit as 'real' an 8th Doctor companion as Liv, Charley and Lucie etc were i.m.o, it arguably made sense in 2003 to split the continuities to give them all free rein to do what they wanted (or at keast keep the reference to a minimum) but there's now enough evidence or references between the different continuities to imply the 8th Doctor from the audios experienced at least some of the events from the comics and novels if you want to read things that way, if not just chalk up the differences to the time war, faction paradox or yet another brush with Amnesia. Terra Firma doesn't really retcon the Sam reference anyway-the Doctor never calls Samson Sam, and has his memory of the Griffin siblings completely wiped prior to Terra Firma so he couldn't have been referring to him in Minuet In Hell, some of the Titan Comics reference the 8th Doctor companions (Fitz, Liv and Izzy were apprently mentioned as past companions by the 10th Doctor in a recent comic story), The Zygon Who fell to Earth references The Bodysnatchers, some of the EDA audios reference the Doctor's exile on Earth from the novels, Desteri and Izzy appeared in a 12th Doctor DVM magazine, and The Doctor uses a Purple Volkswagen Beetle in Dark Eyes 2, something he also owned in the early EDA Novels.

Luckily I'm not very rich and kinda picky which ranges/doctors I follow ...wait is that a good thing probably 85-90% of the stories I've bought have been on sale prices and even with 200(ish) titles listed on my BF account I've barely scratched the surface of the companies output, both a good and bad thing I suppose I have more to look forward to, but I'm even further away from catching up. Though if I ever win big on the lottery BF can expect a very, very large order coming there way soon afterwards...
