Recently, I hung up my keyboard when it came to online reviews to fcous more on my own creative endeavours. It was the perfect excuse to finally do a whole piece on what I feel are some important elements in preparing to be a reviewer/critic, which you can read here: thirdactfilm.com/guidelines-to-be-an-online-reviewer/As we have several reviewers on here, this'd be a good place for you to dish out any tips you'd like to newcomers as well.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I think you've nailed it: although my field is books, the tips about knowing some of the history of your field helps because it gives you more perspective as well as being able to make some recommendations or comparisons. I'd totally agree about watching/ reading outside your favourite genres/ time periods because it does help to appreciate where a lot of creators are coming from as well getting a lot more out of what stories are trying to say.

I'd totally agree about watching/ reading outside your favourite genres/ time periods because it does help to appreciate where a lot of creators are coming from as well getting a lot more out of what stories are trying to say. This is especially true in film, given so many movies have scenes and elements 'assumed' by people i.e.e Play It Again Sam, when it was just Play it Sam. You have to go back to get an honest picture and not arbitrarily assume just because you've seen it referenced and parodied multple times on Simpsons or Family Guy or Dead Ringers or SNL or wherever.
