I'm disappointed. Mostly in myself, because I feel like I'm missing something major. Everyone raves so much about how good the EDAs are and how much better Lucie is than Charley, and I've just finished Horror of Glam Rock and I can't get into it at all yet. I took a break of about six months after listening to The Girl Who Never Was in order to listen to other ranges (mostly Torchwood) to serve as a "palate cleanser" before diving into Eight's adventures with a new companion. Figured that would help me not make immediate comparisons to Charley, and on that front, at least, I was right. Maybe it's just me. At this point, I'm hoping it's just me... because I found Blood of the Daleks rather boring, predictable and poorly-paced, and Horror of Glam Rock was just... well, it's just awkward, and not in a good way. So far, McGann seems off his stride here for some reason, and Lucie is striking me as somewhere between Tegan and Series 2 Rose Tyler on the annoying scale, with an overlay of Ace and her emotional baggage minus all the awesomeness and redeeming qualities. Tell me I'm off base. Tell me it gets better. Tell me there's stuff I'm going to enjoy soon and that it's worth it to keep going. I want to love this. I really do. But two stories in, and it's some of my least favorite work I've ever heard from Big Finish, and easily the least interesting the Eighth Doctor stories have been, barring Absolution.

Keep going to Eddie Robson's Human Resources and see how you feel then, I had the same reaction early on as well. Something about my taste in Who stories didn't quite gel with what was going on in the NEDAs. Blood of the Daleks was great with a fantastic by-play between Paul McGann and Hayley Atwell, but after that, it wasn't quite what I was looking for. Not bad, not by any means, but not for me. I think there's a particular mindset required for them. They're no longer classic era serials, but NuWho episodes and may be better approached as such. They're very era-specific, aren't they? Listening back on them, it's amazing how much some of them sound like what Power Play was to the Lost Stories. Hmm... Try Wirrin Dawn or The Scapegoat, I remember having a very high opinion of both when I first heard them.

I wasn't big on Series 1 to be honest, I didn't even like Blood of the Daleks that much even though everyone went on about how good it was. The only ones I really enjoyed were Horror of Glam Rock and Human Resources, the rest being just alright. I've now heard Series 4 but none of Series 2 or 3. Based just on Series 1 and 4, I honestly think they're far superior to at least the parts of the Charley era I've heard (Storm Warning - Scherzo).

I like blood of the Daleks and I like storm warning and like Lucie better than Charley, but I think it is all a matter of taste, a friend of mine like Charley better than Lucie and if you like top gear try max warp

Barring a couple of episodes i loved the series. the fourth season was particularly amazing and the end had me shaken, literally. I loved Lucie and this series was the reason I got big time into BF. In comparison I found charley somewhat irritating.

ok....so I have to admit that they have dated somewhat, we have had lots of feisty companions since lucie, but at the time she was a breath of fresh air after the tortious final batch of 8/charley releases.
BF have gone from strength to strength since these releases and there are better releases but nothing as harrowing as the final few releases in series 4 or as heart breaking as some of season 3.
I will say they get much better from series 2 yes there are misfires but the chemistry between lucie and the doctor pulls you through.
keep going, you will enjoy them once the relationship kicks in and you have some great fun episodes like max warp to look forward too.
but personally I remember them fondly and lucie still counts as one of my favourite companions.

I think I started from series 2 as it was on the radio, then bought the first, then subscribed. From the top of my head I'd say more than 80% I enjoyed a lot, very few I really didn't. A personal list of absolute favourites (and it would change if I re-listened) is:
1.3 Glam Rock - fun and great to hear Bernard Cribbins 1.5 Phobos - great atmosphere 2.2 Max Warp - brilliant Top Gear tribute 2.3 Brave New Town - really clever story 2.5 Grand Theft Cosmos - trains, Sweden, sci-fi thieves, great stuff 2.6 Zygon Who Fell to Earth - Zygons, Tim Brooke-Taylor, pivotal Lucie story 3.3 Beat of Orlok - beasts, Samuel Bernett, Miriam Margoyles and some mistaken identity 3.4 Wirrn Dawn - full on action adventure 3.5 Scapegoat - chilling and stays in the memory 3.5 Cannibalists - another clever and amusing story 4.1 Death in Blackpool - Christmas, death and secrets revealed 4.2 Situation Vacant - Apprentice spoof with great cast 4.4 Book of Kells - Tamsin's best story, and that reveal 4.5/4.6 Deimos / Resurrection of Mars - Tracy Ann-Oberman, Ice Warriors and more 4.7 Relative Dimensions - my favourite BF Christmas story (even more so than Chimes of Midnight [shock]) 4.9/4.10 Lucie Miller / To The Death - powerful ending and lead in to Dark Eyes

We can't all of us like, or love, the same things. I would echo some of the thoughts already covered. The EDAs do get better with the second series and perhaps some of the earlier series are a little dated. I will also echo the sentiment that the fourth & final series was a emotional roller coaster.

Each to their own but I thought the Eighth Doctor Adventures were pretty good overall. The first season was a bit hit and miss all right but the 8DA's got better as they went along and Season Four is up there with some of the best told Doctor Who stories in any medium. What a run of exciting Doctor Who adventures that whole season was, and a real 'Wow!' ending. It's definitely a range worth persevering with.

I thought Blood of the Daleks was alright (not spectacular, but solid), but I couldn't get into Glam..., so you're not too far off my opinions there. It does get better. And better. And better. There will be rough spots, but 8DA doesn't really hit its stride until the final two stories of season 1. Not that there aren't some decent stories before that, it's just the the end of the season becomes something of a touchstone for the remainder of the range. And Human Resources has my favorite Lucie line. So don't give up hope, and be ready to have the occasional poor story in a season, but it really is worth it to keep listening to the 8DA.

I felt the same when I first listened to the EDAs. The "humour" in BotD was just awful, especially the "ooh yeah, nasty piece of work apparently" lines. Fortunately they don't continue and do get better. I think I've seen people say that the fourth series is the best of them although I still prefer his adventures with Charley.
