I was reading Doctor Who: The Complete History and was surprised to discover Tom Baker nearly agreed to appear in The Five Doctors.
I'm not sure I like the initial idea of the Fourth Doctor being the main one though. It would have been a little unfair on Peter Davison.

I don't think he would have been the 'main' Doctor, it's just his plotline would have been different to the others (third Doctor Above, second Doctor Below, with Between passed by the fifth Doctor rather than the first, who would have stayed in the TARDIS) because Terrance Dicks reckoned that his was the darkest incarnation and the most likely for Borusa to turn evil.
(Very annoying - back in 2013 one of those clever youtubey movie teams was planning editing in footage of the fourth Doctor into this story, so that he would be present along with the others at the end, using rotascoping and other techniques, but the BBC clamped down on them and the plan was aborted).
I don't know how close Tom Baker came to agreeing to appearing, but he did agree to appear at the anniversary photoshoot - JNT booked the waxwork in advance because he didn't reckon TB would turn up. He didn't. On the other hand, JNT got Tom Baker to wear his costume for 'Dimensions in Time' by dint of just having it hung up on a coat rack in the studio. Tom Baker just naturally reached for it despite himself!)

My imagined Actual Five Doctors is that when the Fifth Doctor teleports to the control room, we cut away and expect him to complete the teleport but really it's the Fourth Doctor. The Time Lords have managed to rescue him from the Time Scoop. He argues with them until the Fifth arrives and basically all of Davison's scenes from then on are shared with Baker.
While I don't think making him the Main Doctor of the special would be right, he would then be given a special status as the Cavalry - and the One You Thought Didn't Come Back.

Tom in the early 80s was gonna be NO-ONE'S sidekick in Doctor Who and not part of any ensemble. Best that his ego (at the time) wasn't allowed to take over and his persona not allowed to overshadow. Some shadows are too long to cast and Tom's is one. Funny how history repeated itself with The Dark Dimension where it was also gonna be "Tom Baker And Friends" with other Doctors relegated to minor roles and cameos to allow Tom the main part but that's what happens when you're the icon of the role. A pity as Tom worked uber-well with McGann on Light At The End. Would love to hear him do another BF multi-Doctor meet. |

It's a shame we can't have a 4/8/War box set now. That would have been interesting given that the events of Genesis of the Daleks are what started the Time War in the first place. |

I could imagine they would get on more than most Doctors do together. 10 would probably act all 'inner fanboy' as he did towards 5 in Time Crash, and 4 would lap it up. I'd still like to see it happen though because of the 'Most popular Doctors' angle. |

Although I agree that Tom worked well with Paul McGann and I suspect we might get another 20th Anniversary multi-Doctor story soon from Big Finish, what I would really like is for the Fourth Doctor to have a story with his successor - the Fifth Doctor.
Perhaps it is not a “sexy” matchup and Peter probably wouldn’t be too keen on the idea, but it would be an interesting meeting. Bringing those two eras together.

I don't think he would have been the 'main' Doctor Actually: I'm familiar with that quote, but I've always thought that it was exaggeration - it would *look* like the main role to an egotistical actor because it's the one that advances the plot, but I don't think it would have meant more screen time than anybody else. Absolutely. Up until Davison... um.... expressed his views on Tom Baker in DWM (and we all know how *that* interview went down in certain quarters!) I thought this would be a really good pairing - the blase fourth Doctor pushing forwarding without a thought, and the fifth Doctor muttering sceptically and sarcastically at his heels. Unfortunately, BF don't necessarily jump at really good ideas like this. We never got a project for William Russell and Peter Purves after they were so good together in "The Five Companions", I'm not holding my breath for "Time in Office #2", and whatever happened to 'Moonbase Utensil'?!! |

Tom Baker & David Tennant in a multi Doctor story, here Big Finish take my money.
Tom was not happy with season 18 dramatic tone & didn't like the changes made by Chris Bidmead & J-N-T so there was no chance realistically of him coming back even for a cameo as Tom back then in his mindset was the Doctor & J-N-T had pushed him out, he even kept away from the other Doctors at Longleet signing autographs upstairs away from Troughton, Pertwee & Davison.
Thankfully Tom has mellowed & his cameo in Day Of The Doctor is i think his way of apology for not being in the Five Doctors & less not forget he's loving playing the Doctor again for Big Finish which at one time he was completely against doing.
