What good reason? Nobody liked it. All three of the Comedy Playhouses were heavily criticised online. I liked it, although admittedly I thought it was in the wrong timeslot and I had heard the radio version previously and I happen to find Tim Vine funny. (What were the other two Comedy Playhouses in that run, by the way? I can't remember). "Porridge" is a sitcom about life in prison, being a hybrid sequel-remake to a very very funny and much-loved series from the 1970s. (I also disagree with johnhurtdoctor about "Goodnight Sweetheart". It may not have been perfect, but I was staggered that it didn't go to series. It was immensely popular). Yes it was inexplicably popular in its day, but the one off only got 4.92 million viewers. Almost a million less than the Porridge reboot.

Porridge is much more widely known and therefore its revival was always going to get more viewers during the comedy pilot season. If word of mouth had spread on how funny the one-off Goodnight Sweetheart was, a revival series may have achieved much higher viewing figures.

The utter travesty that is Teen Titans Go is still around despite being complete cowplop. The Transformers films show no sign of stopping and they have the creative merit of The Dominators. You take that back! Bayformers makes Dominators look like Shakespeare.

Then one has to ask why Goodnight Sweetheart is a forgotten comedy? Surely if it was as great as fans claim it would be well remembered? It has a fanbase, but watching it again recently it is terribly old fashioned & some of the attempts at humour painful. The basic premise is offensive, 'haha look at how hilarious it is to be a man committing adultery. How long will he get away with it'. I've never watched a sitcom with as many unlikeable characters.

I haven't seen any of the original series, but maybe it was just unlucky? Maybe the pilot for a new series simply just made more people laugh and remember it?

Ok, well I guess that brings the Goodnight Sweetheart chat to an end if you haven't seen the original!

I thought the reboot pilot had legs, the 60s would give a whole new set of jokes and scenarios, but yeah - JHD is right. Gary Sparrow was a creep and in 2017 his behaviour is not as permissable as in the laddish 90s sitcom environment.

I could imagine this working very well as a musical. Brilliant idea!
