You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

If it had been shown in a kids slot, or even a 'family' slot, it would have been a smash hit.

If it was greenlit there must have been a good reason for it. Clearly this show doesn't resonate with you. Doesn't make this any kind of stables.
Porridge sounds like a kids show about talking breakfast foods. Or, on the other end of the maturity scale, a sequel to Sausage Party.

The utter travesty that is Teen Titans Go is still around despite being complete cowplop. The Transformers films show no sign of stopping and they have the creative merit of The Dominators.

I can't find the viewing figures anywhere, but I can't imagine it would have achieved anywhere near the same ratings as the similarly unfunny Mrs Brown's Boys. Could be wrong, but it being on late at night and overnights being down anyway would suggest poor ratings. The BBC are going to be massively regretting giving this rubbish a Christmas Special and not, say, the Goodnight Sweetheart one-off revival pilot that for some bizarre reason never went to a series.

Ratings don't indicate quality. Here in NZ the highest rating shows tend to be awful reality shows like Married at First Sight, The Bachelor or The Block. I understand you have a different perspective. This isn't something you're going to watch, so don't comment on it. You'll have two Doctors at least this Christmas anyway, nothing is going to change that whatsoever. You'll be watching it, so be happy with that.

I think it's crazy that the BBC didn't listen to the viewers and commission a full series.

This is what the BBC probably listens to & represent what viewers think more than online opinion. Porridge - 5.68 million viewers (28 day data). Goodnight Sweetheart - 4.92 million viewers (28 day data).

My concern with this is that it feels like a waste of the license fee when they could have given a Christmas Special to a more deserving show. The vast majority of comments online were calling it rubbish, and we're paying for more of it. BBC Comedy is in enough of a poor state as it is without them wasting more license fee money on a show that wasn't well-received.

Unless you're in a position to take affirmative action there's nothing you can do about it. Complaining about it on a forum isn't going to help. Vote with your remote and watch something else.

Miniscule compared to ratings. Ratings determine whether a show is deserving & it is not a waste of the licence fee, unless the whole licence fee was spent on this one show.

All three of the Comedy Playhouses were heavily criticised online. I liked it, although admittedly I thought it was in the wrong timeslot and I had heard the radio version previously and I happen to find Tim Vine funny. (What were the other two Comedy Playhouses in that run, by the way? I can't remember). "Porridge" is a sitcom about life in prison, being a hybrid sequel-remake to a very very funny and much-loved series from the 1970s. (I also disagree with johnhurtdoctor about "Goodnight Sweetheart". It may not have been perfect, but I was staggered that it didn't go to series. It was immensely popular).
