My god Apple keeps making iTunes worse - it’s like they have let Microsoft design the updates for them.
The latest version will not display audiobook alphabetically. It’s like something on the backend is unable to read the meta date or is reading it different a d organizing things drunkenly. Has anyone else notice this and if so has anyone heard of a fix or workaround?
Alternately, any suggestions for a good free media plYer for Mac?

I always resist updating iTunes for exactly this reason.

I always resist updating iTunes for exactly this reason. Pretty much, yeah. If a version of iTunes is working fine for you, why update it?

Pretty much, yeah. If a version of iTunes is working fine for you, why update it? Possible security issues, maybe? But they keep screwing up existing functions to be less functional.

I get annoyed by some of the updates, too, but I just adjust. I've been using it too long to switch.

They say that as they want you to keep updating it, it also gives the impression that they are moving forward all the time. A program that isn't updated could come across as a program forgotten. iTunes has so many updates in a year, most are not very important. If you are using a stable release and have no major OS change or new devices, stay with it. Apple tinker with things, and for some reason what the people of Cupertino think are 'improvements' are often not in the real world.

I hardly ever update. I guess I'm on a very old version.

You can only put off the update on a Mac for so long before it is force pushed along with the regular Mac OS updates.
I put off updates as long as possible for that reason.

I found out it's only the grid view that's messed up. It basically sorts by chapter title instead of the actual audiobook title - and duplicates any audiobook with multiple chapters - so everything is technically in alphabetical order so long as you ignore the actual thing it should have been sorted by.
The list view is thankfully untouched, though the downside is that you can't see the beautiful cover art. Another workaround I found was creating a duplicate playlist with all of my audiobooks and setting that to grid view. That shows up exactly how the old grid view library looked, though unfortunately the playlist information banner forces you to only view two rows at a time.
Either way, I'm very disappointed iTunes hasn't fixed this yet. If this persists into the next update, I really think I'll make good on my threat to find an alternative to iTunes.

iTunes is getting progressively worse, techies talk about it being bloated but it worked well up till about 3 years ago and now it does not. progress? i am sick of with each update they alter how you do things, then change it back, the alter it again.......and if it pushes apple music at me one more time!
i have come to the point that i have abandoned it completely these days and use a file management app and players that actually work properly.
add that to the utter disaster that ios 11 has been, turning my lovely stable ipad pro into a horrid mess of an operating system, that crashes daily, made perfectly useable apps redundant, screwed up acuometer or what ever the thing that knows which way you ipad is, pretty useless on screen brightness and volume controls, and the list goes on!
i am at the point of abandoning apple all together, and don't get me onto macs!
