I can't help but feel older fandom needs to step up a bit more in regards to younger fandom on the discussion of social issues. I'm not saying we don't have a lot to learn, we do and we need to be receptive, but we have a lot of passionate young fans who aren't neccessairly (such as the infamous bi Tweet back in 2011), especially in regards to teenage fans, who aren't neccessairly thinking things through with the easy access of a keyboard and an internet connection, especially those of us who are personally invested in such issues.
I'm not saying Moffat's work isn't up for criticism , it is, but I also can't help but feel that this fandom has put him through the wringer somewhat.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I just want to point out here that I am a huge fan of The Moff but I don't believe he is beyond criticism. I agree that he has copped a beating online about some things and - in the context of society as a whole - I think some of them may be deserved. He has the right idea about a lot of things and his heart is definitely in the right place but he has the writer's attitude that story comes before anything else and that the audience's attention needs to be held onto at all costs. He is also - I feel - a natural writer of comedy so jokes are often put into places where other writers might leave them out.
I don't believe he has copped more of a hiding than other showrunners: some of the stuff I read about RTD online was just plain stupid. The stuff that fans would write into DWM in the 80s showed an almost laughable ignorance about how a show is put together and was almost libellous towards JNT and the writers and actors.
I think that fans invest so much in a property and when it doesn't live up to what they themselves hold to be important the disillusionment can be crushing and it can lead to them lashing out at the creator - the backlash to Star Wars over the new movie, Star Trek fans over the direction of the new movies/show, Supernatural fans over pretty much anything - just show how much a story can fill a space in someone's life. Some fans don't want to acknowledge change until they are used to it. But the advent of the instantaneous reaction given by the Internet can exacerbate things to the point that standard reactions become overblown and exaggerated.
But I don't believe it's just the younger fans, unfortunately.
