There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I grew disenchanted with experts who could do everything they put their hands to - and had also done everything so that nothing was new or unfamiliar to them - when I was younger but I'm growing more enamoured with "competency porn" as I get older: characters like Andy Weir's "The Martian" who are able to break an obstacle down into baby steps and solve each one as it arises because they are sensible. As a consequence of several brushes with depression over the years I've become more aware of how to deal with issues and set up routines so that their effect is minimised before they become major problems. I guess I like to see that sort of thing mirrored in the fiction I read/ watch/ listen to. I also like characters who react in a realistic manner to the situations that they've been thrown into: Corwin of Amber (from the series by Roger Zelazny) is a bit of a superman but he reacts in a human way to the things that happen to him. Harry Harrison's Stainless Steel Rat is another competent hero who has a wide set of skills and experiences to draw on to get him out of situations.
Of course, having said that, the character that I most identify with - and who I see myself in quite a lot - is Adrian Mole who blunders his way through life and makes poor decisions because they seem like good ideas at the time. I can totally relate to that, having made my share of stupid decisions with the best of intentions over time.
