How would you rank modern talent shows?
For me, it would be:
1. Britain's Got Talent - So much variety. Pretty much any talent goes on here, from comedians to escapology acts. The chemistry between the judges is fantastic, and there will never be better presenters than Ant & Dec.
2. Dancing On Ice - Before this would have been lower down, but The X Factor has gone downhill recently and I found myself wishing for January to come so there'd finally be a talent show on ITV that doesn't feature singing. The danger element always adds interest, and the show suits the presenting duo of Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby well. Christine Bleakley was okay but not quite the same as Holly (glad they brought Holly back for the latest series). Torvill and Dean are brilliant too, although they were better as coaches than the judging role they have now.
3. The Andrew Lloyd Webber Shows - Another one that would have been lower down before, had X Factor not declined in quality. These shows were quite camp, but hugely enjoyable. Again, another talent show that has a great host in Graham Norton. Some hugely talented singers were discovered - Ben Ellis, for example.
4. The X Factor - Gone down three spaces on my list. In its heyday it was a lot of fun, but later on into its run the judges started to take the competition between them to be the winning mentor way too seriously. It's one of the only singing shows to produce success stories (Olly Murs and 1Direction being the most notable examples) and when not introducing gimmicks like the awful Prize Fight it's great if over-long.
5. Strictly Come Dancing - I'm not a great fan of this show but there are far worse talent shows out there than this. The bad jokes are cringey, but it generally achieves a good standard of celebrity and the chemistry between the judges is fun. If I was interested in ballroom dancing I'd probably enjoy it more, but I just find it dull to watch.
6. Pop Idol - Too short-lived to leave much of an impression, but Simon Cowell was a great judge who rightly went on to bigger things. Plus Ant & Dec.
7. The Voice UK - This is heading towards the shows I'm really not a fan of now. I just really don't get the point of this programme. It's trying to prove it's only about the voice...but then when it gets to the live shows people can vote for their favourite. So it's no longer about the voice but the whole package. Still, Olly Murs is adding some much-needed warmth and humour to it.
8. All-Star Musicals - A one-off that aired last Christmas, but it was a solid idea that didn't quite work. It broke the format of most talent shows having a set of judges, which led to way too much talking with the celebrities and the VTs were too much about Michael Crawford.
9. Let It Shine - I enjoyed this one last year when it started but later on into the run the talent felt lacking and when I later found out online the winning band weren't even going to have a lead role in the musical as a viewer I felt betrayed.
10. Splash - Clearly trying to imitate Dancing On Ice, but the problem with diving is that unlike ice skating it only lasts a few seconds. Blink and you miss it. Plus Tom Daley doesn't have the most interesting personality. Torvill and Dean are much more engaging to watch.
11. Tumble - Another Dancing On Ice imitator, but with gymnastics. This just felt cheap, from the set design to the judges and celebrities. Plus the name makes it sound like a kids show.
12. Dance Dance Dance - Recreating dances from music videos should be a workable concept, but instead it was a complete mess. Terrible choice of celebrities, bland judges with no personality and none of it was live. The only good thing to come from this was the only decent judge Ashley Banjo - now doing a great job at judging Dancing On Ice.
13. Get Your Act Together - Britain's Got Talent but with celebrities was basically all this was. It even had Stephen Mulhern from More Talent as the presenter. They couldn't even be bothered to make this live. Unsurprisingly it was swiftly axed.
14. Pitch Battle - This was an abomination. They picked judges with the worst screen presence imaginable - Gareth Malone is hugely talented but a TV personality he is not, the performing choirs and groups were boring and it featured one half of a presenting duo that I'm fed up of seeing on BBC1 right now (Mel & Sue). I don't think there will ever be a worse talent show than this.
